Inlet manifold

Just a quick question
When looking at the inlet manifold gasket,theres a hole in the bottom corner,whats it for ? I know the four round holes are for the cylinders

Coolant passes through that square hole - seal between head and manifold.

Coolant passes through that square hole - seal between head and manifold.

Thanks,do you know the coolant flow route, does it come out of the head or in

Thats the path out of the head and into the stat housing towards the rad. It can of course use the bypass tube when stat is closed. Im in the middle of blanking this off and running the water backwards and out of the rear of the head for my EFI conversion so have looked at it in detail lately

Thanks, ive made a new engine back plate to run coolant into the back of the head,how are you going to do the sat housing

I made a thick ally head back plate and added a thermostat housing to it. My original stat housing wont be there as Im losing the sprint manifold completely. The problems start when looking more closely at the head gasket and block/head water ways. Std set up has the No1 inlet side gasket hole all but blanked to stop water coming from pump straight out of the stat housing, so it travels down the block and up into the head at the rear then forward. On my set up I have punched new holes in the head gasket and will restrict the rear block to head passage to allow water to travel up into the head from the front initially then exit at the rear.
What are your intentions with yours?

Didn't think there was enough room to fit the stat housing at the back of the head,any chance of seeing a picture of what you've done, I'm going to make a new manifold,ive got a rover 45 manifold that im going to sort of copy
Tank wise i liked Ians idea off using the fiesta tank,but am going to use the standard tank and fit range rover fuel pump inside

I'll try and get some pics this coming week, its all in mock up at the moment. I got a mate to weld in a tank unit into the top of my tank with pump inside with oem filter sock, which helps with rust flakes. Been running a low psi electric pump inside for 18 months with great success ,which makes it easier to drop in a high pressure pump for the efi (i already ran 2 fuel lines front to back all on the drivers side

Fuel tanks today are made from plastic. It doesn't rust.
This is a major consideration for me, plus Fiesta tanks are readily available and cheap.
Making an inlet manifold in conjunction with a single throttle body is something I have considered.
The principle is quite simple..... have equal runners, made as long as possible (for torque).
However you can encounter all sorts of difficulties with the air box design.
There are loads of threads on the internet detailing different folk's difficulties.....

I love the idea of plastic tanks but I'm not sure about the space it would take up in the boot. Did you ever try the fiesta one you were thinking of Ian?

This is how I intend to site the tank.
Doing this means relocating the spare to a vertical stowage location, which means seem reshaping of the boot floor...
I will need to replace much of the floor anyhow, so not too much of a problem.
There is a bit of storage space (between the tank and back inner panel),
sufficient for golf clubs? Not that I play or have any interest in doing so either!
I believe a KA tank is smaller but have not seen to assess. The plastic ones are (or were?) dear I think.
Also, would there be a suitable fuel pump?
Pictures I saw suggested they are quite narrow so might go in angled to fit, permitting the spare to be flat?
The Fiesta one doesn't do well that way..

Had about the same problem after fitting a 70 liter lpg tank next to the petrol tank but solved that with a steel wheel and a civic 13 inch spare tyre.

Ian, hard to get perspective in the pics. Does that tank fit underneath the hardboard cover? If so the vertical wheel may be an option if storage above the tank/board is still viable.

Although the main body of the tank is lower, the high points sit slightly higher than a Dolomite tank, maybe 2 or 3 cm,
meaning the boot does remain viable.
