Sprint Rear Wheel Brake Cylinders

#1 Post by Tony Burd »

MSO failed its MOT on OSR brake binding & it was pretty much locked.

Luckily I managed to get the drum off & it turns out I have a seized wheel cylinder, I guess this is a sympton of not using it enough through the winter.

When I build MSO I refurbished the originals with a seal kit, is this the best route again or should I look at new.

I want a quick solution as I need to get it MOT'd before next weekends New Forest Run.

So where is the best place to buy new?

Thanks

Tony

Given the timescale...
I think the best option is Rimmer Bros.
You cannot fault their order processing or delivery times.

(For any car) I always go for new wheel cylinders.

Agreed, luckily they're are a readily available and cheap enough at £30 a pair for LPR branded ones that it's not worth messing around with old ones.
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

So are the ones Rimmers supply branded, all I hear about Rimmers is poor quality Chinese manufactured stuff.

Is the cylinder itself siezed? Not just siezed to the backplate?
Either way you may as well fit new. Paddocks are good ones :D

What he said^^^^^^

Also Fitchetts are good, and they know the difference between an 1850 cylinder and a Sprint one, which some suppliers don't (no names, no pack drill) also do reliable 24 hour delivery.

I was hoping it was this, it was the first thing I checked as it would have been an easy fix but it is the cylinder sadly.

Thanks for the replies, will check out Paddocks and Fitchetts.

You seriously listen to such hearsay?
As a forum moderator I have to pull people for this, remember the thread about the poor quality/fake lower steering
coupling? How many posts was it until the OP came clean and admitted he hadn't bought said item from Rimmer Bros.

In answer to your question, Rimmers sell British made wheel cylinders for the Dolomite Sprint, County brand.

Hi Ian,

I try not to listen to hearsay but Rimmers tend to get a lot of bad press, I have purchased many parts from them some good some not so good but to be fair anything I have not been happy with they have replaced.
As you can see from my post I am up against it time wise so with this purchase I have to get it right first time, and it is not a job I want to do again in a years time.
Please feel free to delete my post if it is not appropriate.

Thanks

Tony

Aye....

No problem Tony.

As an aside, it is very worth watching the interview with the brothers Rimmer on Graham Robson's Triumph Cars DVD.
They give a clear explanation of the market's influence on them as they both sell and recommission parts.

I am old enough to clearly remember the constant slating that new BL parts received from all directions
so find it more than a little amusing to observe today that they same parts are held up as wonderful high quality :) .
My experience of wheel cylinders in general is that they are a bit of a lottery, eg we fitted Delphi cylinders to my friend's
Citroen but one only lasted two years (about 5K) :( .
To this end I'll keep a pair to for the Sprint, after all if you have an umbrella it will not rain.... :D

thanks,

Ian

Plenty on Ebay from known suppliers (paddocks, ANG etc)
Some people are like Slinky's, they serve no real purpose in life but bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

I got a pair from Paddocks in the end as a couple of people recommended them, arrived next day fitted ok so all good.

Car passed MOT today so all ok for the New Forest Run tomorrow, weather permitting. :D

You make a good point Ian, I spent a lot of time in the 70's cycling to Unipart (Appleyard?) on Canal Road in Bradford for my dad with an incapacitated car, taking back new parts that either fell apart coming out of the box, was completely the wrong part or had failed prematurely. I'm happy to use all of the Triumph suppliers today, I'm grateful that they exist, and also that they at least try and remanufacture some parts even if they don't always get it exactly right.

Good luck with the run and the weather Tony!
