my 1500 only has the factory fitted interior rear view mirror and i was thinking of getting a nice pair of chrome door mirrors from rimmers. is it a big job to pit them/drill the door holes

They usually "pit" by themselves after a few years!😁 Not a big job to fit, just put some primer or hammerite in the holes after drilling them else they'll eventually rust.

I've just fitted a pair on my 1850. They are supposed to use a plastic expanding fitting that can be used from the outside only. I couldn't make them firm enough like that and they wobbled about all the time. Eventually I used screws and nuts inside the door. A bit of a fiddle but it worked.

I used spire clips with the self tapping screws to secure mine. I've still got my passenger mirror to fit so I'll have to document it on video and with some photos.

There seems to be a general discrepancy over where to fit the door mirrors, insofar as the ideal spot on the drivers side is nowhere near ideal on the passenger side - like all you can see is the 1/4 light frame! I've got some original doors here, i'll do some measuring later and report back!

I just put them as forward as they could go without fouling the opening of the quarter light.

That’s sound advice right there. My car only has a drivers door mirror that’s fitted in a position which doesn’t allow for the quarter light to open fully. Very annoying. I suppose the mirror was factory fitted, so points to another of BLs design flaws?

That sounds about right..... Mine were both factory fitted and n/s one fouls the quarter light :(
