Vehicle lifts

Has anyone had experience of lifts such as the one in the picture.

They are good value and compact for the home user. My concern is where to locate the lift pads, know that the jacking points on our cars are a bit dubious when in top notch condition.

To me these are only useful for working on wheels /brakes / suspension etc. Jacking points would be a concern too as you say. If you had a workshop a 2nd hand 2 poster would be better value imo.

The Jacking points don't factor into it with dolomites as you'll be lifting over a spread area along the sills and not on the J points in most case, the sills should be more than capable of taking the weight and if not need replacing.

I funded one of these for a friend's son who has gone self employed working from home as a mechanic; he ran out of main dealers to work for, but took the training from most of them before falling out with his bosses! It was ideal for him as he had limited headroom and only single phase electrics at home, and he absolutely loves it; it allows him to cope with most jobs on his own. It was £1300 plus VAT (he's paying me back £100 per month!). It is portable too, albeit very heavy. The only mod he made was to ditch the trolley that the hydraulic pump and control panel sits on and wall mounted them.

He did his research on the various types, there are cheaper ones, but they are limited in their application. I'll get the spec of his for you...

These things are pretty good in their way. The garage opposite mine has one that they use in the spray bay, which has limited height.

However, whilst it's perfectly fine for working at waist height on brakes etc and has limited usage on FWD vehicles (as most moderns are) it's not a lot of use on a RWD car like a Dolomite, with no underside access to the gearbox, prop etc. Not much cop if you need to work on the sills either!

My own workshop has a height restricion, a massive (and unfortunately structural) beam across it's already rather low ceiling! I can get a small 3 box saloon to the full height of my ancient (1953) 4 poster ramp in it, but vans, 4x4s and MPVs have a much lower "operational ceiling" I get round it by rarely using the full height available, instead I scoot around, at half height or a little more, on an old office swivel chair! It works for me and is a lot more restful than standing up all day! I'm hoping sincerely that my old "Coronation model" Bradbury will see me to retirement, now only 17 months away, if it doesn't i'll replace it with a used 2 poster, these can be had for about £500 and most of the smaller ones run on single phase power. Not that i'll be selling my tools or anything drastic like that, but I will be giving up working on moderns, which I have come to loathe!

To lift up and occasionally work under the car I use four stands. I did think also about such a scissor lift as for wiring the dash is most of the time the highest point. Four stands gives more room under the car and easy to store. These stands can reach 80cm.

They are quoted at £1150 delivered which I didn’t think it was a bad price.

Unfortunately I don’t think I have enough height in my garage to get a 2 poster in..although they are a similar prices and gives you better all round access.

The floor is or was the last time i was there covered in a lot of usefull spares and tools :lol: If it was tided up you would'nt be able to find anything Steve would you.

The point is that the area UNDER the ramp (where I do all my scooting) is clear or the the ramp wouldn't drop to the floor! Though it's sometimes tricky to find somewhere to put the chair when lowering the ramp!

Contrary to popular opinion, I DO sometimes tidy everything up and put stuff away, mainly to avoid tripping hazards. But I know where everything is!
