Getting tax exempt?

My 1978 sprint I think should be exempt now and January is the time to do it. Whats the procedure in the post office please?

Please NOTE this is not definitive, it's from memory, but should be enough of a clue so the the counter staff at a post office can find out

Must be done manually without scanning!
Using the Post Office screen ask the counter staff to select compliances, then vrm plus, then select vehicle with changes, (keeper, 6mths, 12 mths, disabled) at the very end when it's time to pay, select zero-rated, then there is the choice for cash, cheque, direct debit, zero rated, if you select zero rated then there is the choice for PLG, historic VRM etc.

It's a little confusing, because it will be old enough from January, but the rolling tax exemption law starts in the new tax year, i.e April. That's my take on the logic anyway.

My car is a 78 too. I have had a look online to tax it and it will be payment free from April. You can do everything online. If your car was built in 77, as mine is, then you are tax free already if you can prove the build date with a heritage cert.

Your 78 built/registered car will not actually be VED exempt until April 1st 2019. Which is the same as my own Sprint. It will however, already be MOT exempt if you should wish to claim such, as that goes from DOFR, regardless of build date or buerocratic delays.

Ah ok April it is then. I knew it was going to be a bit later than the 40th birthday(which was sept 2018) and somehow thought January was the time I could do it.
