Overdrive engagement

#1 Post by Dolomitejohn »

Hi all.
Anyone know if its possible to soften the engagement / disengagement of j type on a sprint. Was recon few years ago but very low miles since. It's always been like it. Complete box is coming out soon so wondered if anything I myself could do to make it glide in rather than thump in. Oil used is ep 80/ 90. It's fine when cold.
Ideas?
Cheers
John

My local expert workshop who reconditions these told me to only use Castrol VMX and that has worked well in my Sprints, even racing. However I haven't needed to recondition one myself. However, I have a reconditioned overdrive on a Moss 'box in my Jag and with that I always have to depress the clutch when disengaging the overdrive. Engaging is okay.

I believe somebody like overdrive spares (is that Dave Twigger??) should be able to help. Give them a call....

Hi John.
My overdrive was the same before I had it overhauled, sometimes I would assist operation with the clutch to make the transition a little smoother.
I mentioned this to Mike Papworth when I had it overhauled at the beginning of last year and he was able to adjust the pressure. It is now seamless.
Worth asking when you drop yours off.
