25D4 distributor - Replacement

#1 Post by bazyerma »

Hi

My 1975 1500TC broke down on the way home last week. The engine would idle but would not rev, so I costed to my mums and dads.

The following day away I removed the distributor cap and saw the cap contacts were furry and the rotor arm abit sooty (FYI I replaced the points with the britpart electronic kit 2 years ago and this is the first problem I have had). So I cleaned it up and its now running fine.

I have priced up new distributor (below with the electronic kit fitted), coil, leads and plugs at under £100.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Powerspark-E ... 2423161772

The question is, what coil should I use, the book says its ballast is in the wiring room, and my coil has nothing on it but a Lucas stamp, the book says it should be a 15P6, Does below look correct?

Why are you replacing the dizzy? It sounds like you need a new cap and rotor arm. Is the dizzzy worn? Do you have play in the dizzy shafts?

As for the coil, it doesn't really matter, as long as it has the right resistance rating. You can use a multimeter to check the resistance of the primary coil on your current coil, 1.5 ohm for a balast system, 3 ohm for 12 volt system.

When you wired up the britpart kit, did you use a 12 volt supply? If you take the power off the coil of balast system, the module will get 6 volts instead of 12. It will probably work but it won't be good for its longevity.

The coil in your link looks to be right for a balast system. I would be a little careful buying off ebay, some of the coils sold there are made of cheese but if you trust the seller, it shouldn't be an issue.

Hi, I was gonna replace the dizzy as it just feels like there is a bit of play, and at £100 for a new one plus plugs, cap, leads and coil I think it makes sense, especially as I need my car 3 days a week for work.

I will check the coil tonight and confirm if its a ballast or not.

Thanks

Barry

I have a few classics, Triumphs and Land Rovers mainly and I almost always fit Powerspark electronic distributors from "Simon BBC". Apart from one that was made wrong and so wouldn't work when initially fitted they have all been faultless and a good upgrade.

Those electronic distributors look like a standard dizzy with a britpart kit fitted (ETC5835K).

That or their branded version either way I think it fitted to a new/rebuilt distributor for £60 seems good valve to me!

I've recently fitted one of SimonBBC's replacement distributors to a customer's GT6 mkI, the trouble prone Delco dizzy. Went in in minutes, fired up first cough and ran much sweeter immediately than I could achieve with the old worn one in hours of tinkering. The timing scatter was wicked on the worn original! The one I fitted appeared to be brand new, only time will tell how long it wll last, but for £100 complete with rev counter drive, it was worth a try which has paid off, at least for a few years!

It's a shame the low volume Sprint exclusivity doesn't make it practical for him to reproduce a 44D4!

Hi All

Well everything fitted an worked a treat, Ordered Wednesday night via ebay and had everything in my house on Friday. Great service.

Fitted everything back the way it was fitted, but it looks like the pick up to the coil is fitted the wrong way round (positive to negative ect) but it runs well.

Would it cause an issue if I swapped it over, and why is one lead shorter than the other?

The worst thing that can happen is you fry the module! This is exactly whay happened to a mate with a 1500 Midget, he put the wires back on the wrong coil terminals. It killed the module instantly, didn't even fire up till I put a new one in!

If it aint broke, don't fix it!
