It was announced yesterday that GM is pulling out of Australia.

It wasn't completely unexpected, given that we and New Zealand are very small markets in the grand scheme of things. (Aust has a population of 25 million and NZ 4+million)
The general Oz public are pretty P'd off with GM because it means the end of the dinkum di, true blue, Aussie "Holden" name, which has been around since the 1830's. (as a saddler & coach builder before cars)

But its all because of much bigger plans apparently. You UK guys probably already now this, but GM is planning to cease making RHD vehicles soon and is pulling out of all RHD markets, including the UK India, Singapore, Japan, several others and here down under.

They flogged Opel/Vauxhall to Peugeot a couple of years ago, though they did sell some GM crap in the UK, the Chevrolet Spark comes to mind, all American hard plastic and essentially a rebadged Daewoo Matiz, which is not a good thing to rebadge, tend to be driven by 82 year old ladies called Doris whose never had an accident, because they all happen behind her.

There do seem to be some rather intriguing economic strategies going on in the course of "making America great again". Constricting their markets and introducing trade tariffs appear to fly in the face of most other countries' plans. Of course we are not told which period in their history they consider to be the "great" period!
