Timing Chain Tensioner

#1 Post by Damson6 »

My first attempt at rebuilding a Sprint engine so have been kooking through the forum for information and thankyou to everyone on the forum.
Much discussion revolves around timing chain tensioners, and as everyone seems to sell Rolan and all the concensus on here seems to be avoid Rolon I thought I would try to obtain a better product?
I contacted SNG regarding C36617LG the Jaguar version and they sell Rolon and Jaguar tensioners, so I asked who made the Jaguar ones and he said that they just buy them from Jaguar and come in a Jaguar box but not marked on the item. So for the £40 price difference are they better? He did say that the Rolon ones are sold in much greater numbers.
So Robsport sell a Jaguar tensioner for the Sprint but theirs is £70 but in the complete kit the chain is Rolon.
So contacted Rimmers they sell Sprint tensioners manufactured by XRN Engineering and the chain is by Duplex.
I suppose it is good that there is a choice but just leaves me more confused?

I've heard the Robsport one is good.

If you have the original Renold? one and it is not too scored just reuse it.

The problem with the Rolon part seems to be that manufactures have forgotten how to make rubber stick to metal. Rubber bit fell off, with bad consequences. That was a few years back, so maybe they have fixed the issue but I wouldn't chance it.

It has some grooves in it, just wondering how the Jag people get on with their Rolons?
Might go with the Rimmers XRN Engineering one?

Here's a picture of the original tensioner from my 70,000 mile 1850. I simply reused it because of all the tales of Rolon tensioners parting company with the base. The engine runs well with no undue chain noise.

Thanks for the picture, mine doesn't look too different to yours so I might check and reuse!
