Yes, bore size. TR7 will be 90.3 mm diameter, 1850 is only 87 mm

If the 1850 is like the Sprint, it will have a flaired tube for the dipstick where the TR7's is straight so that the long tube can fit over it.

But don't the engine number give it away?

Graham
The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

If the engine is fully fitted, it is most likely a TR7 engine if it is wearing HS6 carbs with a carb brace linking them, whereas an 1850 should be on HS4 with no brace.

The TR7 backplate should have countersunk pins fixing it to the block whereas the 1850 should have bolts.

As Graham says, the engine numbers will be prefixed differently, the 1850 will start WF whereas TR7 will be CG or CL if reimported from the US/Canada.

If it says CH, I'll buy it.
