Exhaust woes

#1 Post by GIX 7 »

The mild steel rear box on my SE is disintegrating rapidly. Until I can get a proper S/S exhaust, has anybody ever managed to lash together a temporary replacement using bits from other cars? I can weld something together if I can find some sort of rear box. All suggestions welcome!

I did something similar, too cheap to properly fix the blown rear silencer on my 1500, I just bought a generic silencer of roughly the same length off ebay. Chopped the rotten one out and welded in the new one. It held up fine till I switch to a Sprint engine and it passed the MOT.

Not difficult to do, as long as you get the right diameter silencer. Just make sure you got your angles right when you weld it on, so the tail pipe sits in the right position.

I believe you want 38mm, the cheapest I can find is 30 quid at the moment, which is more than I paid.

Sorted.
Went to a scrapyard, found an exhaust off a 1990 Micra, and welded the expansion box in to the old system. Looks good, sounds good, and will keep the wolf from the door for a while!

Being a cheap skate when the over axle section fell apart I cheated and made a side exit pipe that comes
out under the rear passengers door
Some people are like Slinky's, they serve no real purpose in life but bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
