Sprint pistons ?

Hello everyone - Newbie here. I've recently bought a Sprint which is having the bodywork and runnng gear restored over the winter which gives me and engine builder ( actually, mainly him..) time t oget the engine and box sorted.

So far so good and the head and crank in particular seem in exceptionally good condition which bodes well, but Ron (builder, who is 83 and real old school) is keen to look at a rebore and new pistons ( I imagine this is a familiar issue). The only options so far seem to be County + 20 pistons but he's adamant that they aren't good enough to go on "his" engines ! He thought some Cosworth ones he has would work but turns out they are going to be a bit too big......

What other options are there ( if any ?) - short of going through all of the catalogues for every piston I'm struggling to see where we go next with it other than sleeve it and then rebore??

Any pointers/recommendations/thoughts would be MUCH appreciated

Help !

Welcome!

It sounds as if you are in good hands with that engine builder.

You have several choices:

1. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283516281201 ... Sw-IlgRv0x I believe these are JP brand and may be available slightly cheaper if you contact them direct and buy outside of ebay
2. Good used AE or Mahle pistons, if you can find them
3. Resleeve and use NOS standard sized pistons which crop up from time to time, but that will increase your machining costs. (I do have a spare set of NOS Mahle standard sized sitting on my shelf)

That's a brilliant answer and thanks for taking that time - really appreciate it.

Yes, Ron is brilliant - he used to run the Chrysler works team in the 70s and has won loads of championships. Still works 7 days a week and he's in Telford ( looks like you're West Mids too ??)

I'll have a chat with him on that then and see what he thinks - it really is a case of him telling me what he's going to do !

Don't know much about JP but I'm sure he will.

Thanks - owe you a pint/coffee and who knows, we may end up going down your Mahle route ??

Kevin

Thanks, yes I saw those and they look decent but I think would only be an option if we go the sleeving route....

There's a set of cosworth sprint pistons for sale in NL I believe. Another option is to buy an 1850 engine and bore to std. sprint size.

That sounds interesting, thanks.

Any idea where I can find those Cosworth ones?

Thanks

I have a set of these. They are genuine original Leyland ST pistons (STR0254) made by Cosworth, complete with a set of rings (STN0097) still in the original packaging and never opened. They are for a standard bore.

pm me if interested

I rang Rimmer today to enquire about Sprint pistons which they sell under part no. UKC2843 at £590 + VAT.

I was told they are made by Wassell. It appears that Wassell may have bought the rights to the Hepolite name, but I can't find any evidence they make Sprint pistons.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

If you still need pistons, we have had a sort out and have several sets of pistons, different bores, std and forged/cosworth new. Also some more used sets both std/cos etc.

These and many other parts will be for sale soon, will go in parts for sale section first.

In relation to the comment above, we also have three 1850 engines complete.

Send a message if you are interested.

Cheers

Yes we have used MAHLE PISTONS & RINGS +20

Other than that, we only have std bore left, second hand and new.

Cheers,
