Fuel Sender readings

#1 Post by David Kirk »

Hi all,

My fuel gauge is reading lower than I would expect. When tank is full (only after pay day!) it only reads about half on the gauge.

Can someone confirm if the sender readings are correct? with the sender on the bench connected to a meter I get 264 ohms all the way down(empty) and 31 ohms fully up (full). Does that sound correct?

TIA

Hi David,
I have a spare sender:

At the empty end it measures 240 ohms.
At the full end it measures 18 ohms

Hope this helps ,
Peter.

I have just substituted a 33ohm resistor for my fuel sender in the car.

Gauge reads 3/4 full with engine running. I am fairly sure my gauge is calibrated OK.

don't forget the voltage stabilizer, this can affect readings too.

Your symptoms are usually caused by a perforated float allowing fuel inside it, reducing its buoyancy...

Thanks all,

I found a second (spare) sender and it read 22 fully up and 253 fully down. So I guess we are all about the same - give or take a bit.
I noted that the Earth lead to the sender was a loose fit so tightened that and I have also ordered a new Voltage Stabaliser as well, even though I think the Temp reading is about right. The car is off the road at the moment with a small job escalating into a full rear suspension strip down so it will be a while before it gets checked again in detail. Hopefully working again for Northern Dolly Day!
