1850 Engine numbers

#1 Post by Zeus »

Hi,

Are 1850 engines that have a number that ends in HEA actually different to those that are just HE.

I assume the "A" is for automatic but I can't see that the engine iself should be any different.

The A indeed denotes an engine built from the factory to run with automatic transmission.

But, as far as I am aware, whilst certain peripherals to do with the engine backplate and flywheel/flexplate fitting are different from auto to manual (plus the auto doesn't have a clutch spigot bearing in the crank) it's nothing that can't be fixed by swapping the relevant bits over. Many autos have been converted to manual over the years, even one or two have gone the other way, in no case was it needful to actually change the engine block or crank.

If you engine still has an automatic flexplate fitted, be very careful how you approach swapping stuff and make sure you get all of it right, a good many years ago, I converted an auto 2500S to manual o/d, used the auto flywheel bolts and only found out on road test that the auto bolts were a few thou too long and had bottomed in the crank rather than tightening on the flywheel! The rattle was horrible and I had to do it all again!

But if the motor has already been converted, I wouldn't worry about it.
