Hello to all

#1 Post by Rumpole »

Hi there guys and gals.
I’m new to the forum and the club but not new to the 1300 fwd. Fourty years ago I bought one and loved it and now I’m about to be reunited with one.
She needs love and attention and I want to upgrade the 1300 to TC.
I’ve seen twin carbs and manifold for a 1300 Spitfire, is that the same?
Can anyone tell me whether or not the spitfire wheels will fit?
I also need to know if the rev counter from the same vehicle will fit. I’m looking to add sympathetic upgrades and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tim.

Hi Tim
Welcome!
I believe that the manifold and carbs off a Mk3 Spitfire should fit but I don't think the wheels will as they have a different offset.
We also have one SAH replica extractor manifold left if it's of interest? See https://forum.triumphdolomite.co.uk/vie ... =4&t=31852

IIRC the 1300TC had an extractor style 4 branch exhaust manifold from the factory. The Spitfire exhaust manifold will not fit the car, nor will a Spitfire type 4 branch, the engine is too high and the routing is wrong.

On the upside the MKIII Spitfire inlet manifold and carbs should be just fine.

A rev counter from an early Dolomite might look better as the font would be more sympathetic to that on the other dials

I made the assumption that he was referring to the inlet manifold...Obviously no Spitfire exhaust manifold will fit any of our cars (sadly!!).

inlet will fit but the exhaust manifold although it will fit the downpipe will foul the subframe, you'll also need the bigger valved head off a TC or spitfire, fitting twin carbs alone makes no real difference.
Spitfire wheels will fit but as Andy said the offset differs and they will sit slightly outside the arches
Any 4CYL rev counter will work and the Dolomite one will be a direct fit into the tri gauge space, you'll just need to relocate the battery amp (not really needed anyhoo), fuel and temp gauges you could fit dolomite ones into a pod under the dash with a bit of simple wiring.

Thanks for the helpful advice. The first thing that anyone should do when buying a classic car is join the club because there’s a load of friendly people out there and willing to help.

I would be EXTREMELY DOUBTFUL whether Triumph Spitfire wheels would fit a FWD Triumph 1300 or 1300TC!

To the best of my knowledge & belief, the FWD Triumph 1300 or 1300TC wheels have a much larger wheel offset than Triumph Toledo & Dolomite wheels, which in turn have a much larger wheel offset than Triumph Spitfire wheels! :(

There are some posts about alternative wheels for the FWD Triumph 1300 or 1300TC cars in the 2023 Mongol Rally topic thread.

Subject to confirmation that the published data is accurate (ALWAYS a wise precaution!), wheels from the 1990~94 Rover Metro (i.e. NOT 1984~90 MG Metro) would seem to be your best off-the-shelf, second-hand, substitute wheel option with wheels of 3.75 inches (i.e. 95.25 mm) PCD - pitch circle diameter, 57.1 mm centre bore and 52 mm wheel-offset; in sizes 4.5J x 13 inch and 5.5J x 13 inch.
