sprint electronic ignition- current options

I have been searching the forum for answers, but it seems that things keep changing.

I have seen a unit fitted with an ambassador cap, is that the way to go thesedays? Does that then use the 45d4 electronic unit?

All this is because I am getting asked what I want for christmas, and this seems a good idea if I am building a sprint engine up in the new year.

Basically YES.

I have done this with both Simon BBC's (powerspark?) EI kit and Lumenition Optronic made for the 45D4 distributor in the Sprint 44D4 distributor using a 45D rotor and Ambassador cap. Even with the lumenition chopper plate under the rotor, still works fine! Both have been in service for over 2 years now with no problems whatsoever.

The Optronic is the one i'm happiest with, because the car had a hi-torque starter with no ballast bypass tag, I fitted a 12v coil and 12v constant supply, the thing starts first cough every time, even if left for weeks at a time!

Ta, I was getting in a tiswas about stuff that just isn't available. I amy get a pertroxix EI as I have had very good experiences with them over a very long time. Saying that, I have a 45D4 dizzy somewhere that may have an EI fitted..... watch this space!

EDIT Having done a search, the ambassador caps all seem to be held down with screws? Is that correct? (I can't remember about the sprint cap, that stuff is buried too deep at the moment!)

Beware of what they call "file pictures" especially on ebay. The few Ambassador caps i've had here, all sourced by the car's owners, have had a clip fit facility, though a couple have had clip or screw. The standard Sprint cap clips on.

A little digging (surfing ebay) shows that some caps are screw fitting only, others clip or screw. So care required!

is an intermotor one, but seems to be screw on only.

I just fitted a Pertronix, but the LU-244 kit to keep the standard cap and rotor is hard to find.
I think you could also use the LU-143A if you go to the Ambassador cap and rotor but I find those caps don't fit very well.

Lumenition Magnetronic MTK007 also fits in the standard 44D dizzy.
See the 44D dizzy rebuild thread on here somewhere for some good pictures of how it fits.

The BBC kit is the same as the Britpart one for Landrovers. Landrover parts supplies generally sell things cheaper, so they use to be the goto place to get one of these. Sadly the days of picking up one for less than £20 seem to be over, so you may as well go to Powersparks.

To be honest, unless you want to do sophisticated tuning, I don't why you would bother with anything more expensive. The kit is basically just a hall sensor which triggers a circuit which shorts the coil. The only thing that can really go wrong is the unit overheating, which is why you're suppose to use the special thermal paste when you install it. Otherwise it is pretty bulletproof and if it does go wrong, they are cheap enough to carry a spare.

The only reason I used SimonBBC initially, is because he is local to me and if I had a problem, it would be no trouble to look him up and make a fuss. Which i've never had to do! I've kept using his stuff cos he really knows what he's talking about and the after sales service is exemplary.
