Door Hinges and Door seals

#1 Post by rvfrc45 »

Hi, I've just been back looking at many previous posts but still unsure of the answer.
Can the door hinges be overhauled, Do they have roll pins fitted or are they special pins you have to get.
Also I need to have a better look at my rear hinges as I do not remember them being handed but its been many years
since I've played around with the car so I've probably forgotten. Are rear hinges idiot proof so they can't be fitted the wrong way.!
Also door rubber trims, best places to get them please.
Thank you in advance. Cheers Gary.

Ive had all 4 of my door hinges rebuilt, i took mine to an engineer, he removed the pins and drilled the hinges to take over sized pins that he made, while they were apart i got him to drill a hole in the side of the hinge so they can be oiled

At one time, Fitchetts were selling recon hinges on an exchange basis though I don't know if this is still the case. The hinge pin is very simple. But in my experience they often need to be drilled out and pressed in. Mostly I just go for better condition originals.

IIRC all 4 front hinges are the same, 2 of the rears are handed and 2 are not. The ones that ARE handed are idiot proof!

If you mean the seal rubber that goes round the perimeter of the door, I think you can buy it by the metre from some of the usual suspects. But comments i've heard include "hard to fit", "Hard to shut doors once it's on" and "bl***y expensive" I know it's getting harder every day, but I like to use pre owned original ones, at least they fit!

You can buy new furflex to go round the door openings too, so long as you want black! (Henry Ford, eat your heart out!)

But it's somethng like £6 a metre and you need upwards of 12 metres to do the job!

The true cost of a resto job is not in the big metal bits, but the silly season stuff, for example, a full car set of new trim and weatherstrip clips for a Sprint is close to £200 these days! Only a couple are NLA, those being the P clips for the loom and the gutter moulding retainers for Vinyl roof cars.
