Steering column support plate/bush
Steering column support plate/bush
Hi all, the bush for the steering column shaft support pops out of the support plate occasionally. I have a polly bush from Chris Wittor fitted, which doesn’t take much effort to push back into the plate, do you think that the hole in the plate could be worn, and if so, where to source a replacement. Regards Terry.

Re: Steering column support plate/bush
This old chestnut again?
There is an ancient debate about whether to fit this bush from under the bonnet or inside the car.
Most manuals have it fitted from under the bonnet (as I presume yours is, if it falls out) Some parts list have it fitted this way, others show it fitted from inside the car.
My personal experience says forget the "book" and fit it the engineers way, from inside the car. That way, the big lip on the bush stops it falling through and the big washer on the bottom of the inner column bears on that lip (instead of a knife edge of bush) and stops it riding up.
However, if, on inspection, the hole in your bush mounting plate has ovalled out from long wear, I can find you another better one!

Re: Steering column support plate/bush
Hi, I finally got around to removing the support plate and the hole has worn, so I am looking for a replacement. The bush was fitted from inside the car so I don’t know why it came out, and what would you use to seal it back on. Regards Terry
