SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
A thread from martin in the members section as promted me to post this.
I was in the process of organising a southerndolly day in late july in a location that would be easily excessible from southampton, basingstoke, and oxford, but martin is under the illusion that a SDD is a complete waste of time so can i please have your thoughts.
to give an idea of distances, acording to autoroute
basingstoke 15 miles
oxford 50 miles
Reading 35 miles
bristol 75 miles
guildford 45 miles
portsmouth 40 miles
if plans are finalised for this years meet i will be sending details via post to all members in the area to maximise numbers of attendees as a lot of members are not internetted.

Re: SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
Justyn,
You have clearly mis-interpreted my remarks, for which I apologise.
What I am trying to say in the other thread is that whenever and wherever you organise an event, there will always be some people who (for absolutely legitimate reasons) cannot attend. That is life. However, it is a fact that you maximise attendance and therefore the success of the event if you set a date early (and publicise it as widely as possible).
With respect, we are rapidly approaching mid-May, and you are discussing an event in July, still with no fixed date (forget where it is for now). This, whatever else it will do, will limit attendees, as people will have committed to other things.
You know Justyn that my enthusiasm and commitment to this Club is as good as anybody's, and if there is any way I can attend, whenever and wherever it ends up being, then I will do so.
Last year, the date was fixed so late that I had already commited to a holiday, so I could not attend. I am sure other people encountered problems.
I am not aware that I have at any juncture suggested that the day is a "complete waste of time", nor would I. I would love a Southern Dolly Day, and I would love each and every member in the south (and there are quite a few of us, I am sure), to turn out to it.
I am sorry again if my remarks offended you, but I believe that my point is valid.

Re: SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
Come on Justyn, you know as well as most of us that Martin wouldn't say anything derogatory about the club or committee members.

ok im sorry and retarct my statment that martin said SDD was a waste of time, this is what he actually said
Justyn replied to one correspondent that the Southern Dolly Day was there to serve south of England enthusiasts. Fine in theory but in practice this is rubbish. Sorry to be harsh but it is.
Anyway, that aside, please could i have you thoughts, good or bad, it is looking to be on sunday 3rd or 10 august, which know is during school holidays and some peolpe may be away but it has now given you all 3 months notice.

I will come if we can burn an effigy of Richard Hammond
Perhaps we could meet at a good museum like Haynes, Brooklands (my favourite) or the Watercress line at Arlesford, just a few ideas to consider.

Re: SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
The museum idea is a good one, it also provides a place for solace if the weather is unkind.
There always used to be a big classic car run out based around the Haynes one, but I have had a quick rummage on the net and cannot see any details of it. It could have been a good idea to base the event around such a run.
Neither date is great for me, but I will do my level best to get there.

*edit* sorry just seen jons bit, the watercress line is a good idea, we went to a show there last year but i think it would be too out of the way for some.

Re: SOUTHERN DOLLYDAY
juat had a mail from Carl, the basingstoke rep who has suggested the milestone museum in basingstoke, I admit this is a better location than the one i was planning, hopefully we will have a definate confirmation for either location in the next week or so.
