Whilst winding the window down today, the black knob came off the end in my hand... oo er missus... Anyway it looks like the metal fastening on the back of the knob has broken so I'm on the look out for a replacement. But how do I get the window winder off? I cant see any screws or anything...

If you push the black plastic surround back you will see a metal pin which you can push out. The hard part is getting it back in again whilst pushing the plastic surround back.

Push the black plastic bezel back and look at the metal "shaft" of the winder handle (you'll have to jam a screwdriver between them to stop them closing up) then rotate the handle slowly you will note that there is four holes passing through it, one of these 4 has a metal peg in it that you can push throught with the end of a nail etc.
Once the peg is removed you can pull the whole metal winder away.
Be careful that you don't loose the metal peg as it will just drop out as you push it through.
To refit you'll need to have a pair of long nosed pliers to put the peg back in the hole.

The last time I put one of those back on I did it by dropping the pin through the hole as I didn't have any pliers. It took 3/4 of an hour.

Don't remind me. I have to do all four when SFB gets back.

All mine have been replaced with a length of welding wire bent back on itself at both ends; much easier to take out and replace.

Or use a R shape clip.
You can get them from most good DIY stores and some of the crap one's too.

Putting all the glass, locks/winder mechanism was a complete nightmare for me. So the winder pin was nothing in comparison.

The knob coming off is a common problem but once you have taken the handle off you can normally rivet it back on. This stops the knob turning but I have not found that to be a problem and once riveted I have not had any further problems.
