Original Steering Wheel in Leather

#1 Post by HolgerS »

When driving in this time of the year with the low hanging sun reflecting on the polished spokes from the steering wheel make you blind during your trip and the problem in the summer issued by the 30 year old plastic rim from the original steering wheel slipping between your hands I decided to cover the steering wheel including the spokes in black leather as I do not want to install a Moto-Lita. Now the result is visible and I must say that I am realy happy with it. It feels great and is slip-proof for the summer and do not reflect the sun light anymore into my face when driving. So I decided to show it to you:

What do you think (remember it's an LHD. so no talks like "you're having the steering on the wrong side".... )?

Wow, that looks really well done 8)

I'm not sure if I like the raised bits left by the plastic insets but then again, they do break up the lines and add a bit of detail.

Nice idea! :D

First of all I also thought to get them out but when test fitting the leather I decided that it looks even better than the plain leather without them.

BTW have you seen how fast the kph meter with it's 230 mark looks like

That's the brake failure warning light which was standard on all LHD cars.

Unfortunitly the bonnet release control sits like your RHD version on the far outer RH side which is realy useful when sitting in an LHD car

 Isn't there something else odd like the brake master or the steering gear is still on the right hand side and theres all shafts and levers in the bulkhead to hook it up the the steering wheel/brake pedal on the left?

Not I am aware of yet. The brake master cylinder and the steering column is on the left but it could be that something else is still on the right hand side or is screwed in up side down. In my TR3 for example the whole steering column is up side down in place which means the oil filler screw is below the reservoir. So it's realy nice to fill up the steering with oil there without turning the whole car up side down :(
