I've now virtually lost forward drive after resetting the linkage and replacing the gearbox oil last night. The box wants to drive when engaged but produces very little ...

I've used Radiator Relief from Agrimech and it works fine -bit pricy though, around £23 for a bottle.

Okay, it starts in Park or Neutral and wants to drive immediately in Neutral - but no bumps / thuds on start up in Neutral, compared to when you normally engage Drive.
Dwell Angles and 1850 Dizzys
The larger dwell angle is then probably why it runs okay on unleaded!

What does 42 degrees dwell translate to in a timing angle? - I know the standard should be 11 BTDC with 39 dwell, so does anyone have an idea?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish ...

Strange - haven't seen it for years - used to put it in my Saab 900's, if I can find some I'll try it on the next dolly oil change (been using a 50/50 mix of 20/50 with 15/40 -don't ask why - just thought I'd experiment - runs quieter than on 20/50 and not as thin as 15/40)<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START ...

clonking autos
I concur with Jonners - my '76 1850 auto has no play in the prop and if the idling speed is anywhere near 1000 you will receive a "clonk" on take up! (probably also a bent front end if too close to the car in front as well!)
