When times were hard (post divorce) I bought a 1.3 3 door Corolla of my dear old mum as she had given up driving.<br>
I would still have had that car had it not been written off by a maniac on the M6.<br>
Ta for the reminder, it's amazing how boring the car was and yet how good it was too.<br>

i've just replaced the wifes car with the same budget (£1000). I found a 2001 daewoo nubira FSH with 16k on it. Here i was faced with a dilema, how can i buy a daewoo? Eventually convinced myself it was only a vauxhall in disguise and took the plunge. Its actually ok, though i keep reminding everyone it is the wifes car.

Just starting to realise how lucky I must be. My other half has a choice of Sprint and 1850, and usually chooses the 1850. She'd go absolutely nuts if I bought any of the suggested cars for her. Not tax exempt or low tax, but considerably under your budget to buy so it'll be a few years before that matters. <br>

Only trouble is the rust of course. In fact, that is the only reason I would buy a modern car - rust avoidance.<br>

I count myself lucky that Sophie puts up with me and my old car habbit!<br>
The problem is Soph is used to smoother gear changes due to passing her test a year or so ago in a modern car, she also has a lack of confidence and prefers an auto.<br>
The major factor for the more modern car though is, wherever you drive outside our village there are signs for how many folk have been killed. Thus her want of a modern safe car for driving in Lincolnshire.<br>
I am now looking at Volvo V70's...... To hell with running costs and insurance. <br>

Living where you do Al, and the precious cargo that the car will be carrying, it has to be a modern. I would guess that when you leave Coningsby, you could drive along single-track roads in any direction for ten miles without any street lighting, 3 miles between houses and very intermittent mobile phone signal. Impact protection is an obvious benefit of a more modern motor, considering its intended use. Living where you do, I would go for something with 4WD, so I can reach civilisation (or even Boston, at a a push) in the depths of winter. A non-fashion-victim Subaru, an early Forester maybe, would be well worth a look too...<br>

but having seen what its like to change a cambelt on a scoobidoo and the price of things like abs sensors wich are MoT points....its not somewgere I would go automotively.<br>
The V70 is a good car but beware crank oil seals at the gearbox end...<br>
E34 5 series now you re getting interesting....and X300 3.2's are a real honey.<br>

V40's are good cars, we used to have a few in our fleet and they never gave any grief.<br>
<br>
Very reliable as they are basically Mitsubishi Carisma's underneath. The 170bhp low pressure 2.0 turbo is good fun and economical, the T4 is very fast but far too powerful for the chassis (I think they are 220bhp ish). The diesels aren't great, powerful and frugal enough but they transmit a lot of vibration into the car.<br>
<br>
Handling and ride is average but not on a par with an equivalent 3 series or A4.<br>
<br>
I never found the seats particularly comfy but I think its a matter of taste. The cabins are quite japanese - lots of cheap grey plastic.<br>
<br>
Overall not a bad car though.<br>

Might be a couple of days. I think its a 1.8 V40 petrol. <br>

Same colour as this. Has the 2.0 alloys rather than the steels with wheel trims.<br>
