Yup. Three times this week I've had some plank slam on their anchors dropping from 30 to 15 3 meters in front of camera...its like they just don't understand how they work.

I've also got stuck in tailbacks, due to people sitting at 60 behind patrol vehicles on 70 roads. Of course, I just sail by sitting at 70 set on the speed limiter, nice gadget that is!

One time I even looked at the officer driving because he was doing about 50 with an ever-slowing column of traffic behind and he just looked over his shoulder and shrugged! Bonkers, really.

My oppinion is I'll drive how fast I feel safe at (and for others safety of course). The signs at the side of the road seem like a kind of threat, if you crash and you've been exceeding this speed the Police will lock you up! Regardless of who is at fault!

Therefore built up area, 30mph, too much of a risk of granny pulling out on me and involving me in a crash. Police man turns up "oooh ooooh you were doing a million miles an hour, look at all these black marks on the floor ooooh oooooh, silly little kid" Meanwhile Granny hasn't a clue of what's going on! So I'll drive within the limit for my sake! *Sometimes*

That's the point. The limit is exactly that, a limit, and is the maximum speed decreed as safe for various classes of road by the government. Under normal circumstances, you are expected to drive at the speed limit, and only slow down when circumstances dictate. Obviously this last bit is subjective and can be different from driver to driver, but surely every driver should understand that just because a road has a posted 60 limit, it's still a bit dodgy to try and go around a blind single track 90 degree bend with a downhill approach at 60mph?

There is no way that every single stretch of road in the country can be asessed and limited appropriately. The cost would be completely prohibitive and would mean even less being spent on maintenance. So if pressured, the government would go for the lowest common denominator, and mark up all unclassified roads as 30mph maximum, which would spoil all our fun.

Try living in my neck of the woods. There's barely a single road left on national limit.

Thinking......

Nope, can't think of a single road round here other than a few dual cabbageways that's still national. It sucks.
And its only going to get worse. They will select any piece of half arsed research that supports their arguements to justify lowering limits further.

Lewis, I bet that was a HATO vehicle you were talking about. Did it have 'Traffic Officer' written on the back somewhere? If it is, I tend to go past them at 90. For the moment they can't issue speeding tickets so I make the most of it.
Yes, that's a highways agency numpty. Give them nice cars with battenburgs and words like 'Traffic Officer' and maybe the public will suddenly think there are loads of Traffic Police about!

They are told to cruise at 55mph awaiting calls to sit behind someone who has broken down or sweep bits of lorry up off of the road. I do feel for the actual guys that do it as they aren't paid alot but its the sneaky politics of the whole thing that I object to.
19K Starting pay ain't to be sniffed at..... Even if you get all the crap jobs on the highway.
I can think of worse jobs when I get my pension in 2010.
However it doesn't hide the fact more Traffic Police are needed and their jobs have been hijacked for a cheaper agency.
I have a clean licence, but don't start me on camera's and the further dilution of the Police force

I have yet to see a situation where these guys improve matters.

Family of four on the motorway going on holiday and their car boils-up and stops on the hard shoulder. Nobody takes a damn bit of notice and carries on as normal, until a Range Rover with two Wombles in it comes along with their disco-lights on top flashing away merrily, pulls-in behind them and suddenly everyone is doing 20MPH to see if there's any blood to have a look at.

I extracted a girl from her rolled Discovery a few months ago on the M40 at about 6:30am on a Saturday morning, there was no hassle in the situation whatsoever until these guys turned up, pretending to be policemen. I had to get the girl to formally declare that I wasn't involved in her mishap before they would let me continue on my way.

And there is no way I would work on the side of busy motorways for 19K. I've seen what happens to stranded vehicles on the hard shoulder when hit by a 40-tonner.
With you on the effects of smashes on the hard shoulder.

I wasn't aware they were jobsworths, maybe an isolated case?

To be honest, i'll take my pension spend it in another country and get a paper round!!!

Unfortunately, put anyone in a uniform and give them a car that makes them look like a cop and they will try and behave like one. We used to have garage hands who would drive the plod cars around when they needed maintenance. As soon as they sat in the seat and drove out the yard, they became a different person!

I thought there start pay was 16.5k but that's by the by really. AA patrol guys start on 25k which I think gives some credit to the amount of risk spent on any road with stranded vehicles. As Jod says, it aint a pretty sight when they get pancaked by a 40 tonner.
I saw a blue lighting 5 series BMW traffic Police car pulling a Volvo P1800 with a tow strap down the dual by me the other day.

I felt quite smug overtaking them in my beat'm up Dolly
