Hallo each! Back on this thread. Took the Sprint up to the Naval Air Show at Yeovilton in Somerset yesterday - had a fanbloodytastic day - loads of jet noise and rotor blades (if you're into that sort of thing) plus the BofB Memorial Spit, Hurri, Lanc, Red Arrows, a 747 - yes I did say a 747! - Hawks, Harriers, Tornado plus other a/c from the 50's up to the present day. Anyway, on the way the pinking sound is still prominent on climbing hills which reduces or stops when I disengage o/drive but not completely, and that is after putting the Superblend additive in with a full tank (54 litres with about 75 - 80 ml of Superblend. If, as I mentioned before I had adjusted the ignition, put in new points and condenser, cleaned and regapped the plugs, adjusted the idle and running screws on the carbs to give about 3.2 on the exh analyser - what else could the problem be? Would it be worth coughing up £40 to put it on a rolling road or are there other wizard tricks out there? This is beginning to piss me off!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">
Hot Spots

#37 Post by MalcGE » Sun Sep 18, 2005 10:28 pm

Once read an article in a motoring magazine, Saab displayed constant pinking. It turned out that the head had been skimmed creating sharp edges to the combustion chamber which were causing Hot Spots. Head was removed and the combsution chamber edges gently radiused. All was put back together and problem cured. You could try some 'cooler' running plugs (available form TDC spares) which are the equivalent to the BN7Y specified as OE. I would only recommend using them if you have the club alloy plug tubes as they don't take kindly to being bathed in oil.

Max Ignition Advance.

#38 Post by Mark Larmour » Mon Sep 19, 2005 7:29 am

What is the maximum ignition advance the dissy is giving? Using a timing light, and with the assistance of another person, run the motor up until the igniton advance stops. Depending on whether you have a 9 or 11 degree advance mechanism, the max igniton advance should be 28 or 32 degrees with 10 deg static. If this is the case check at what RPM the distributor stops advancing. If it is possible try and make a graph of what your advance curve looks like, ie what is the ignition timing in 250 RPM steps from idle until nil advance.

If someone has "played" with the dissy it might be over advancing, or if the spring have gone soft it may be advancing to fast. At what RPM does the motor have pinging? To much compression can be a problem if the head has excessive metal removed, but I certainly would be looking at the operation of the distributor as it may be over advancing at low RPM. I don't have the factory figures at hand, but most distibutor are fully advanced by about 2500 RPM.

All these reasons are why programmable ignition systems are good, you can map a advance curve to sort out most problems.

Many thanks to Malc, Mark & Tinweevil for their responses.
Malc - as this problem has only been noticeable for the past year or two and the engine has been back in the car for almost 9 years since restoration, and the head has not been skimmed (original engine) not sure if this would be the answer. But Marks' questions and Tinweevils link have opened up some interesting points. I'll not be able to investigate many of these until the w/end but will hopefully be able to come back with something after. Thanks again guys!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
