sprint carb mounts

I'm partly with Jonners here too. I had some really bad looking rubbers on the 1850 which I replaced with new. On inspection of the old ones I could see that they weren't split through to the inside even though they looked terrible on the outside. So they weren't leaking, but there is another reason to replace split carb mounts - lack of throttle opening. The split ones were allowing the carbs to sag down, especially when you put your foot on the loud pedal, so the throttle wouldn't fully open.<br>

If the carbs don't need vibration insulation but do need heat insulation, perhaps we should make solid mounts from something like tufnol. I have seen a company making inlet manifold insulating gaskets/spacers. We just need to find out what they're made from and make the carb mounts from the same material.<br>

I had no issues with alloy mounts on CAB used daily for about 5 years after installation.<br>

Tufnol is a good material used as a thermal break in steel framed buildings, but I expect it will be expensive...the distributors, Whalebrand, are based around here somewhere...will investigate, I may be able to get some samples we could ask Phil to get machined to test; seating the studs into it may be the problem as its relatively soft and may not hold a thread...<br>

The very first Alloy Carb Mount's where tried and tested on my Mate's Mimosa Sprint.<br>

There where no problems with Hot Starting even on point's ignition come to think of it it run and started better than most car's I have used.The only problem being a sticky fuel needle.<br>

Just found out Quiller do alloy mounts for sprint carbs. Phoned 'em and said i have 2" su's on mine, 'these are only for standard carbs' they said. Just as well, £96 squid for the pair <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :eek --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> Malc, how much are yours 'ol pal?

I've had a pair of Phils' alloy carb mounts fitted for a while now, they are brilliant. I've only suffered the effects of heat soak under extreme conditions ie hot day, blatting down the motorway, then stopping in a traffic jam. After a couple of minutes of idling there's a bit of spluttering when attempting to move off again. This clears very quickly though even at walking pace. I'd recommend them to anyone.

I used to work with an SU engineer who delt with the SU carbs on to Sprints. He told me that the rubber mounts were there to solve the problem of petrol throthing when the engines were on the test beds. (not sure what petrol throthing does to engine performance).<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :D --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> The issue was never seen on engines fitted to road vehicles but the program team insisted that rubber mounts went into prodution. I have had Alloy carb mounts on my standard sprint for over 10 years. Purchased from Chris Whitor. I reckon I have saved £millions not having to buy replacement rubber mounts and have never suffered fuel vaporisation issues or any air leaks <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :D --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Well, i went and got a pair of the standard rubber ones from 'robbers' <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :eek --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> , wacked 'em on (wot a mission), el sprinto started up no problemo <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :hat --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> . Ok the aperture of the mounts are a tad smaller for the 2" su's, but it seems to run and tickover, a lot smoother. As for the mounts i took off, does anyone know of an engineering firm/person, who could re-mount new rubbers? Seems a shame to bin 'em, they are 2" after all <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :b --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":b"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
