funny sprint temp gauge problem

#1 Post by glasgorangersfan » Tue Sep 20, 2005 11:26 pm

recently i have encountered a funny situation. When starting/driving the sprint from cold,, if the heater control is at cold position, the temp gauge climbs almost to fully hot for a brief time (as engine warms) before eventually settling to "normal"....If heater control is warm/hot position this anomily doesnt occur. 1st time this happened i of coarse pulled over lifted bonnet to expect the worst, but the engine was certainly not hotter /overheating at all.??
Any thoughts guys?
Localised

Sounds a bit like localised heating, the heater acting as a bypass till the thermostat opens up. Don't know Sprint plumbing, but check all the hoses are OK and not kinked or collapsed.

and check you don't have an air lock, loosen bottom hose till you get a consent flow of water coming then retighten, maken sure you keep the rad topped up.
This is the old skool way of bleeding the sytem so someone with a sprint might have a easier way.
Oh forgot to say to bleed it when water is hot/thermostat open so avoid the hot water and don't forget the anti-freeze.
The temp pick up is at the other end of the system to the heater. I'd look first at your thermostat to make sure it opens properly; don't assume a new one is good, test it first. Then I'd check the thermistor itself and the voltage stabiliser...
