Gearbox gasket

#1 Post by tdcsuffolk » Wed Mar 31, 2004 11:11 am

Hi, my Sprint gearbox appears to be leaking - possibly from the gasket. Is it possible to change the gasket with the gearbox in situ, by draining and removing the bolts which hold the two sections together? I won't be trying this unless I am sure it will all go back together ok and springs and teeth are not going to fly out all over the floor and into my eyes and I crouch beneath. Removing the gearbox not possible at the mo.

Apologies as always if this has already been convered in previous threads - couldn't find anything.

Cheers. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

You don't appear 100% sure where it is leaking from. Clean thoroughly and go for a short drive and check carefully to find exactly where it is coming from. A little oil can go a very long way so be certain.

An oft overlooked gasket is the one at the front end of the box - within the bell-housing - where the main shaft enters the box. You will need to remove box and cross shaft to do this one and as far as I am aware no pre-cut gasket exists for it. Affraid you will have to nick the kitchen scissors and attack a sheet of gasket material.

Do you mean the seal between the box and the O/D? If you do....I have changed the O/D with the box in situ but I had the use of a pit. It was not at all easy as the O/D is extremely heavy at chest level with limited arm leverage. I will never do it again - I would take the engine and box out every time! I reckon I could do the job in half a day..but I'm not going to! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">

Oil leaks....

#5 Post by Jon Tilson » Thu Apr 01, 2004 10:11 pm

There are a few places oil can leak on a Sprint bix and I'm afraid the only way to diagnose is to give it a good clean and then fill it up and run it....
Its then that you gopefully find its running out of the back of the rocker cover and it isnt gear oil at all....
If it is box oil then you have some options. If its the o/d to adapter plate gasket you can chage it in situ but its a bitch. Its also extremel unlikely....but you can slide the o/d back off the mainshaft and then back on if you must. Its not an easy job and sometimes the splines can be a real git to line up...
The plate at the bottom of the o/d can leak and this is an easy fix. Make sure various plungers and valves dont drop out and go walkies...
If its the o/d tailshaft seal then its o/d off to fix really...
If its the adaptor to gearbox seal it may respond to a tighten but its unlikely. Full box rebuild. On the single rail and 3 rail dolly boxes the exhaust mounting sometimes make these bolts work loose and then they leak. Ive sealed them with hylomar and a good tighten. I cant remember what a Sprint one looks like here.
If its coming from the top selector area you can change the gasket here with the tunnel out.
Obviously tighten the drain plug.
If its at the engine to box joint then its the front seal and you have to have the box out.
Any more advice and I'm charging you...
... thanks lots for all the info. Sadly car not MOT'd so can't really go for a good run, but I will give the box a good clean and run sitting and re-check. It seems to leak even when stationary. More investigations needed methinks. Cheers. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">

o/d removal

#7 Post by george » Fri Apr 02, 2004 1:58 pm

if you run the car rear wheels off the ground and select 3/4 engage o/d and switch off the engine and let it stop still in gear and o/d selected it comes off very easy and is easy to reinstall this method locks the o/d unit and its only the plunger collar u need to worry about when reinstalling the o/d

forgot to say if you do have to strip the o/d unit
we used to have a main shaft to hand to line it up
prior to refitting it very handy
