I am having fun with 1850 mainshafts at the moment.Gearbox 1 had a broken mainshaft tip and the hardening off the input shaft so its history.
Gearbox 2 was dismantled today and I notice a 'sleeve' over the mainshaft tip and the needle rollers running 'loose' and not caged within the input shaft.
My manual clearly shows a 'caged roller bearing' but dont know what comes with a recon kit which is on order.
My question is has the shaft been mucked around with and perhaps adapted somewhere along the line, or is it a standard mainshaft.
Gearbox 1 had a broken tip but the bearing was a caged roller.
Perhaps I should do away with the rollers and have a bronze bush fitted to the input shaft which some local engineering chaps tell me is not a bad idea.
What say you?
