Which oil for LSD?
Which oil for LSD?
hi folks

I replaced the rear axle bushes and changed the diff oil on this occasion (simply jacked up the diff at the front when the tie bars where off and let most of the oil pour out).

Now I have a whining of which I'm sure it wasn't there before - not driven much since the buying. It's only audible when holding the speed exactly, no noise on de-/accelerating.

So checked the oil yesterday and I was shocked to find out it's grey already and you can see shiny particles in it <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> The old oil which poured out looked still like honey, so I fear there must be something wrong!

Wrong oil? Used Catrol Hypoy LS (it's an LSD)

Help <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">
Re: Which oil for LSD?
You need xep plate slip diff oil specifically for salisbury's. Mark sells it for around £20 (enough to do the job). What you have used isn't recommended.

However, shiny particles doesn't sound good so have a good look at the internals. Hopefully you caught it in time.

Mark's number is 01536 763799.

Re: Which oil for LSD?
ok I'll call and ask them! Car will remain where it is until then <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

What came to my mind though is that the old oil was only so clear because the car stood for several weeks, so the particles could have been there before and might have sunk down. (But still, ... I have this odd feeling)

cheers,
Give it a good clean down, get the thick stuff in and see how it goes. I take it it wasn't whining before the oil change?

I'm not sure - but at least I haven't noticed it until after the change so chances are high. Drove only 500 km before but I should had heard.

That's what I used: "Castrol Hypoy LS", since this is meant for LSDs and that's also what is told by Haynes!
However the sound made me uncomfortable and then the shiny glitter stuff...

Re: LSD oil

I've heard a few people advise against the Castrol LSD oil for our diffs. Don't know why its in the Haynes.
Re: Castrol LSD oil
I've used Castrol fully synthetic SAF-XA (75W-140) in the Sprintparts (salisbury plate type) LSD in my race car with no ill effects whatsoever. That was on Castrol's technical dept recommendation.
