Speedo cable (difference between o/d and none o/d types)

Is there any difference in O/D and non O/d 1850 speedo cables?

I think I'm right in saying that the o/d cable has a threaded collar at the gearbox end and the non o/d type has a flat flange held in place by a silly fork arrangement on the gearbox. <br>

I don't think they're interchangeable.<br>

I've got a speedo cable mystery at the moment.<br>
<br>
My OD box has a flat end, (circular flat dish that is retained by a clamp) speedo cable, with a screw on adaptor for the speedo end.<br>
<br>
Both of the speedo cables I've been sent by rimmers (early OD, late OD, sprint) are both totally wrong. One has a wierd plastic lump on the end, the other has a threaded adaptor, neither which suit my box.<br>

Looks like a standard gearbox end terminal to me Lewis. The plastic ends on certain speedo cables clip on to the speedo with a side acting barb (usually 1500 ones and early 1850s from memory) Other cables have a knurled aluminium ring on the back which screws onto the clock. At the gearbox end the item you have photographed is generally clamped onto the speedo drive with a either a separate fork or a figure 8 integral with the cable and a bolt into the housing on either gearbox or overdrive.<br>

I have seen non-overdrive cars with the knurled ring attachment on an angled speedo drive though...

Yes, that's the one. I removed it off the car as that was all that was left of it. <br>

I can't find a suitable replacement for it though, both Rimmer's OD Sprint cables are incorrect, and I'm slightly baffled.<br>

I've seen OD stag cables on the bay that look exactly the same though! Might pick one up and see if that's what it is.

my overdrive cars have a right angeld drive and the cable fits that end with a knurled ring nut thing. The non o/d cars have the end as in your picture, and a fork type retainer with a single bolt into the box. I dont see how an overdrive can have that type of fitting. At the speedo end all my cars have the plastic push on fitting with a springy plastic clip. The sprints may well be different but Ive never needed to have one off. When Ive upgraded cars to overdrive I was just lucky to have the right cable in stock.<br>

on speedo cables. Had a very long and boring conversation at T.D Fitchetts relating to a speedo cable for my car as they supplied the wrong one but they were insistent it being correct. eventually managed to get one from them that actually works and fits in the holes etc.<br>

length is usually the main difference between cables. An o/d cable is usually slightly longer due to the increased length with the O/D bolted on the back.<br>
<br>
Seen loads of cables for 1850's at an autojumble recently, all £1.<br>
<br>
Try Fitchetts if you like but it was easier to take the old cable to them to point out the problem/diferences.<br>
<br>
You can fit and Angle drive right angle piece to an o/d car but it's pretty unusual. angle drive can be removed usually and a normal cable put on instead.

the angle drive was only fitted to o/d boxes if you have one fitted to a non o/d box it's not a standard fitting<br>
iirc the three rail box had a screw fitting for the cable<br>
and the single rail a fork & bolt <br>
i suspect that some second hand items are fitted to some cars which is why some non o/d boxes will have an angle drive<br>
