No Oil Pressure...

#46 Post by MaddMart » Sat Jul 15, 2006 6:16 pm

Well I got up this morning with a PMA. I got on really well putting the engine back in, I even got it lined up with the g/box at ther first attempt.

Put on all the necessaries, apart from the rad & hoses. No spark plugs, as I just want to crank the engine over to get the oil circulating.

no firkin oil pressure showing on the gauge. I took the tube off the back of the gauge with cloth at the ready, crank it over & nothing came out. So I took one of the oil cooler hoses off and still no oil came out. I know the oil pump is ok & I defo remember putting the oil strainer/pickup in (and yes I did put oil in).

I've packed up for today hoping you guys can come up with suggestions.

Mine took ages to get oil pressure up last time it was put back in. It did eventually but after 20 or 30 short bursts on the starter with ht system disabled
Dizzy out and turn the hex shaft with a drill save's any wear to the engine.
Put engine to TDC first mark dizzy before removing.

Start by removing the oil pressure switch and proceed with the oil cooler both side's till oil is flowing,

May be a simple oil pick up problem IE (gasket not sealing).
Cheers Scott & Phil

I was just doing what you suggested Phil, before the Grand Prix. I now have a puddle of new oil on the floor, so at least I know the pump is OK. Just going out to put the rest of it back together. Report back later.

That seemed to fix it. Bit strange that, as all engine rebuilds I've done before have always given oil pressure on cranking the engine!

Almost got it running, just need to get the ignition timing right. Only thing is, now the starter motor's packed up.

Cheers Graeme, I'll investigate further. I think I have a spare somewhere, I'll let you know.

Sorted...

#53 Post by MaddMart » Mon Jul 24, 2006 8:35 pm

...well almost.

Took it out for a quick spin with the rev limiter set to 3k. Temp. didn't go over 85 (not surprising really), got back & had a look under the bonnet for any leaks...none

Went to put it back in the garage & the starter packed up again. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> I'll get there one day.

5 miles down...495 to go.

Got the starter sorted.

I've now covered 160 miles. It's hell with the rev limiter set to 3k rpm. but I'm glad it is as I would have easily over shot it by now with my lead boots.

How many RPM

#55 Post by MaddMart » Wed Aug 23, 2006 7:25 pm

I would have completed more than 500 miles since my engine rebuild, come the weekend, so time for an oil & filter change and re-torque the head.

Since having a rev limiter I've always set it to 6000rpm. I think I'm now going to set it to 6500 as my max. bhp is at 6000, or maybe even set it to 7000. What have you guys got yours set at (those that have) and what are the pros & cons of going as high as 7000 rpm?

I don't have one but I have my shift warning light set at 6400, 6600 and the final oneat 6800rpm on the stack.

On the STR91 you can feel the power falling away at 6500rpm so I haven't really bothered taking it to 7000.
I'm going to give it a try up to 7000 to see if it still makes power, if it falls away after 6500 that's where I'll set it. I know when I went out with Bob K his was set at 7000, running an STR91 cam & seemed to pull all the way.

Mine used to easily hit 7000rpm if you let it with the STR91, but then my engine didnt exactly last very long!

stick to 6.5K to be safe IMO unless youve done a lot of bottom end work.
