#18 Post by AndyS » Thu Mar 25, 2004 2:32 pm

What does it sound like? is it a loud, tinny noise?

Y'know, I'll end up rebuilding the bloody car at this rate just to find the damn thing! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Oh right

#20 Post by AndyS » Thu Mar 25, 2004 2:55 pm

Well it's not that then, this is an intermittent clanking noise. Like you say, it would be a consistent clicking if it was the speedo.

I'll disconnect the speedo anyway at some point.

Oh my, I've got one of those air threshners which has a little prop which spins around when you put the blower on.........I wonder .......<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Right, after further investigation and with the help of the mersey tunnel (2 trips <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> ) and having the window down. I have found that the noise only happens when I put my foot down on the accelerator but is intermittent.

But again, it's only in drive. At a stand still I can rev the car quite happily with no noise!

The exhaust is very firm in its position so it can't be that.

This is so strange!

Only in drive??

That sounds like a torque converter issue to me. I hope it isn't.
Jod,

would you like to elaborate a wee bit more on the torgue converter? Too be honest, I've never heard of it.

Oh hold on, am I right in saying they are used on auto boxes instead of a clutch? If so, mine is a manual.

Ooops apologies for confusing you all.

The noise is on all gears (intermittently) but only when I use the accelerator. If I back off, the noise disappears. It is more noticeable in first and second. Some times it's very loud, sometimes not.
I also get it if I go over bumps. Thats whats got me thinking it might be the exhaust, but is it very rigid and seems to be in order. There also seems to be vibration too!

Very puzzling.

Page 50(4) of my haynes.......... "Wear in the kneedle roller bearing is indicated by vibtration or 'clunks' in the transmission, particulary when the drive is being taken up!!"

Well thats exactly whats happening! Is it a difficult job?

Ususally make a whiring noise which can be heard with the car in neutral and clutch up. Layshaft and input shaft are then turning but not under much load. In 1st to third gears the noise will be much worse and may be an engine spedd related load whining that reduces when in top gear. It tends not to come and go but be constant. How is your reverse? I ask cos the selctor mounting pin sometimes works loose and lets the reverse cog touch other bits intermitently but this is very rare.
I've just had a recon box from those nice people at Canley, so I would have to eliminate the box. It's got to be either prop or a diff problem.
