lightened flywheel

engine going back together soon ready for paint ect,<br>
is is worth getting the flywheel lightened while its off?<br>
wont cost me anything to get done but need to know limits to m/c to ect,is it just made thinner or do you put holes in it????

If getting it done, get it done by someone that knows how to do it... I personally find I'm very attached to my feet...<br>

I think the way to go is to take the metal from the outer area, as the further out the mass, the more it takes to speed up/ slow down, as well as it's supporting less other metal pulling on it (and so is less likely to give way and result in bits of flywheel through car/ flesh).

A lightened flywheel is a mixed blessing and can remove all torque from the engine or push the power band up too high...<br>
The straight sixes are particularly prone to this and some experimenters have produced some notably gutless injected 2.5 sixes....I was talking to Karl Dandrige yesterday...he had one that did nothiong below 5k rpm. Fat lot of use on a road car..especially when the long stroke six is nominally red lined at the same speed!. Given the small four's similarities I suspect the same is true. With a cast iron head and a long stroke under bearinged bottom end you dont want to be spending much time above 4k anyway...<br>

I have a mildly lightened one on my car. I think there's about 2.5kg of metal removed. Tickover is perhaps a little less smooth but on the whole, performance seemed noticeably sharper after I fitted it. <br>

Hmm. I'll be putting my AP Racing clutch plate in soon. Maybe I'll take my 'wheel down my local modification place and see what they suggest.<br>

Any clutch bits that I'll need to accumulate before doing this - seeing as I'm only changing the friction plate.
