clonking noise
clonking noise
When turning the steering wheel to the right, I've got a loud clonking noise coming from somewhere in front of my feet. I can wind the steering back and return to the right without the noise reappearing.
Only when turning left, the clonking noise will reoccur, only more feeble.
When I drive very slowly or when I am turning the steering wheel when standing still, I can't hear anything, which makes it very difficult to locate the noise.
All bushes have been replaced with nylon bushes, as have the balljoints.
Any ideas ?
I Think...
it could be the rack mounting rubbers or intermedaiet shaft.
The MoT man will find it if its dodgy..
Re: clonking noise
The rack mounting rubbers have been replaced by nylon ones. Also, I don't feel anything abnormal through the steering wheel, but I can feel the clonking noise through the floorboard.
As for the MOT, here in Belgium, once a car is 25 years old, it doesn't have to go through an annual test.

Re: clonking noise
Interesting, I get the same 'clonk' when I reverse off my driveway whilst turning left. After that, I never get it again.

Re : No Mot.
Once the car is 25 years old you just have to present the car at an official test centre : they will inspect the chassis number, see if the car has a warning triangle and see if the car has a braking system (they will NOT test it !!!).

The noise I was reffering to sounds as if a certain suspension or steering part is building up resistance when i turn right and then suddenly goes "cloink" through. When turning left it makes a much softer sound as if settling back in place.
But when turning right again it starts all over again, and again, and again.
CLONKING SOUND
I would like to suggest that check that the mounting brackets for the front anti roll bar are not loose.

I found that the nuts had come slightly loose and that the brackets were moving so when I reversed out of my drive with lock hard on and there was a dip due to the road camber I heard a clonk.

Re.clonking noise
I haven't changed the rollbar end bushes as I couldn't find them.
So if anyone knows who sells them I would be very grateful.
Clonking noise
My problem was not the roll bar end bushes but the two brackets fitted on the front of the sub frame.
Ball Joints
Advice from the chaps is valid. Also check yout BJ's, these can also cause clonking. Especially the tops, I had one on XAA, completely dried out with a rusty ball, loads of free play. Check also lower shock bush, on XAA one bush had competely disintegrated, clonked and knocked like a good un
