Painting over any rust is unlikely to be successful. You really need to remove all rust and get back to bare shiny metal. Phosphoric acid or similar "rust killers" can be used to convert any remaining rusty bits.
I use Upol etch primer, and I have a tin of industrial black semi-etch black paint ...

Re: Noises from engine after 12 year lay up
For reliability I switched the fan on my Spitfire to the earlier fixed and deleted the vc years ago. Trouble free cooling!
A most sensible idea. Same can be done on a dolly I expect?
I have been thinking, and I reckon a manual fan saps naff all power when on the move, as the speed of the air ...

Re: Rubber or Polyurethane?
The other place I would avoid poly bushing is the axle end of the rear radius rods; I've seen too many polybushed cars compromising the threaded ends of the radius rods due to insufficient flexing causing the threaded ends to bend and in worst case scenarios shear the threaded end completely ...

Re: Rubber or Polyurethane?
I would be wary of rubber stuff unless OEM. I fitted a few rubber bushes from a "recommended" supplier, they failed in under 2 years.
Many of the poly bushes are the same shore rating as OE rubber, so should not make things harsher.
Also, check the old bushes carefully before buying new stuff ...

Re: Fuel Tank Crud
I would be tempted by sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) pellets and pouring in a gallon of hot water. Be aware this is nasty stuff, very good eye protection and indeed skin is essential. When the hot water hits the pellets it get much hotter, so make sure they are tipped to one side of teh tank away ...

Re: 1975 1500TC – Check your hoses!
That is R6 hose, so not ethanol resistant.
You need R9 (or R14 i think for low pressure hose) and only buy from a reputable seller. ie not AFS on ebay... (theirs is fake and deterioates fast)
Gates barricade, cohline etc bought from proper suppliers. My Gates barricade on my spitfire is 10 years ...

Re: Diff Ratio Puzzle
For absolute certainty, whip the diff out of the case, count the teeth and do the sums. This front loader is a lot easier to work with than the Salisbury axle in the Sprint.
Another vague memory from my GT6 days says the 3.27 has a unique 9 tooth pinion which is a good identifier. It was also the ...

Re: Diff Ratio Puzzle
My usual method is diff/axle out of car to either turn the 2 outputs together and count how many turns of front flange. Or lock one output in place, but then 2 complete turns of the other output. (obviously not a good idea with an LSD)
1.9 ratio certainly seems extremely unlikely!

May I ask why you need this as well as a timing wheel?Sprintparts wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:28 am
Due to the scarcity of Sprint distributors, I have used a TR7 (late model electronic) body with a sensor for the home signal trigger.

Re: Hose clamps
Do you mean for fuel hoses?
If so I don't get any issues with the proper fuel hose clips (jubillee type are useless on small hoses) and that includes a car with a home-brew EFI setup and fuel pressure regulated to 3.5bar.

Re: Tie rod thread size
Hi
After fitting a steering rack, the ball joint on one side gets hard to screw onto the tie rod, the lock nut goes on no problem and I can see the tie rod thread looks rough. Anyone know the tie rod thread size and what might be used to improve the thread condition
Have you tried the other ...

Re: Paint Colour Matching
Some places will manually match a colour. I know Autopaints Brighton do (they are renowned locally, or rather the chap who does it is)
Asking around may find a place local to you. They need a panel or chunk of panel to match.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump
Not fitted one to my dolomite (yet, but will). However, I have fitted one to my Vitesse.
I used a motorbike pump from a Yamaha 600cc bike (makes 110bhp) which is very similar to an SU pump, it even has points. I bought 3, one for the vitesse, one for the dolly, one to be carried as a spare. All ...

Re: Blue or Red/Pink Coolant/Anti-Freeze
My new Rad is an aluminium upgrade Steve.
Does that mean Red/Pink is now best or is it still the blue stuff?

David, I tend to use this from GSF, in both my sprint (ally Golf rad fitted) and my spitfire (ford engine, ally golf rad, done nearly 50k in 10 years)
I use a 50% mix, no need to ...
