I've got a feeling this will be a divisive topic but ...........
The top of the engine is in bits per broken valve spring ages ago and the long running series of events to get it fixed. The exhaust manifold is off and I'm thinking I might get it ceramic coated.
Of course this is not something ...

Re: Tightening order for cam caps and rocker assy?
Ha ha ha ha yes I was referring to the cylinder head but it could just as likely apply to the owner.
Regarding your good practice advice below that is pretty much exactly what I am doing, although maybe with a caveat. I've tried to lay the cam with minimum load at either end on the basis that as ...

Tightening order for cam caps and rocker assy?
Hi
The pain continues unfortunately.
I got some new shims from Alun after a relaxed shipping effort from UK to Perth. I substituted the new shims and remeasured - everything was supposed to be 12 thou but I had a 14, two 13's and a sort of 10.5. Which IS odd because everytime I measure it ...

Re: Grinding valve stem tips
Thanks all. Head is off car on bench. I'd had same view about trying to get it perfect but you have to have a starting point.
I've also wondered whether everything would tighten down further when the head studs are tightened up. I think the cam follower are 14lbft and the head studs 55lbft. But it ...

Re: Grinding valve stem tips
Thanks for all the input.
I was thinking I needed to go back to the engineering workshop and have a difficult conversation but I'm now thinking Marts info might save the day
First up the cam was a new billet (ie not reground) fast road cam from Moss say 25 years ago and pretty certain made by Kent ...

Re: Grinding valve stem tips
Hi Alun / all
Thanks for the offer. I spent a little time double triple checking the measurements for all valves. I'm happy I've made no errors although there is one change where I must have slipped up before.
The details :
Inlet 1 - clearance 3 thou with 94 thou shim, so to reach 10thou clearance ...

Re: Grinding valve stem tips
There were four inlet valves replaced also with new guides and recut seats.
Of these one has the thinnest shim I have at 86 thou and is showing a clearance of 12 thou. So that one has a clearance 2 thou in excess of the target and is OK
For the other three :
- clearance 3 thou with 89 thou shim ...

Always the gift that keeps giving.
Regular readers may recall a thread about my Sprint busting a valve spring. The damage itself was not too bad but the car has basically been in bits since August. Some of this has been waiting for overseas parts, some of it has been repeated trips to the cylinder ...

Re: Valve clearances and camshaft sprocket bolts
Robsport advise they are just regular steel bolts and no need for anything more.
Rimmers similar just describing them as standard grade bolts.
So these HT versions and four bolt modifications not necessary? Does anyone know whether the factory fitted bolts are just regular steel bolts or something ...

Re: Valve clearances and camshaft sprocket bolts
Thanks. I had the same idea also. I realised I still have the old head gasket so I'll use that just to check the clearances.
Based on 0.3 inch protrusion mine would be 7.6mm vs your measured 6mm Tony. However measuring much more carefully with mm scale it looks more like 8.75mm. Half as much again ...

Re: valve springs [and setting clearances - edited]
On the limits maybe yes.
But the advice elsewhere was that the uprated springs with the fast road cam is not necessary and robs the car of a few BHP.
Finding uprated single springs to replace the existing ones seems to be impossible anyway. Its either standard or competition spec. No one seems to ...

Re: Valve clearances and camshaft sprocket bolts
Appreciate the thought but I don't want to get into machining the thing. Its been OK for 40 years with two bolts. I just wanted to know where I could get two more bolts really and whether they were "just bolts" or some specific high tensile spec.?

Valve clearances and camshaft sprocket bolts
Per other threads I'm finally putting the car back together. Re-grinding the valves has taken a lot longer than I remember last time but then again before I just did it until it looked good whereas this time I did leak tests with petrol :-) !!

Re: valve springs [and setting clearances - edited]
I think the uprated springs were optional not mandated. Others here have advised they are not necessary
I've reverted to Plan D and am re-using the original springs. They are all in spec. with perhaps one that is a little more tired. The remaining 15 uprated ones turned out to be a mixed bag ...
