Re: MoT and Tax Exemption

DVLA have used the Q since it's inception as a catch all to chuck anything in that they couldn't be arsed to do the due diligence on. It may finally be coming back to bite them, I hope so!

I registered one of my trucks in 1986 IIRC. It was built up from various parts but was a 1973 ...

Re: MoT and Tax Exemption

Here's a thought, the Q plate was introduced on August 1st 1983, next year the first Q plated cars will be "historic" by definition, I wonder if they will get the free VED?

I've been wondering that. My earliest Q plate was registered in 1986, so only five or so years to go. I have heard from ...

Re: DVLA / engine change

Finally getting round to updating my V5C with the Nissan engine number. I checked the DVLA website and I need to provide one of the following as evidence…

- replacement engine receipt
- evidence from Nissan😂😂
- insurance inspection report
- confirmation from a garage on headed paper

When did ...

Re: MoT and Tax Exemption

Changing the engine just means you are no longer MOT exempt, but you are still in the Historic Vehicle taxation class, so pay no Road Tax.

Although not everything you haven't....

You won't have done it on a (or possibly a lot of) Honda(s).......

Care to take a guess as to why?
'cos you'd be tightening it!
Yep, and a proper PITA they can be.

Re: Triumph 1500TC Crankshaft Nut

Because the Honda crank (or at least, some of them) turns anticlockwise! Because of this the dognut does itself up even tighter in service. Quite often, even an industrial grade 1" drive airgun fails to loosen Honda dog nuts. My normal method involves removing the starter, locking the crank with ...

Re: Triumph 1500TC Crankshaft Nut

And yes, it's reasonably simple to fit a socket to a long knuckle bar, rest said bar against the subframe and hit the starter switch. I've been releasing crank dog nuts by this method for over 50 years, not just on Triumphs, but everything else as well.

Same here.

Re: 1850 Autobox removal

Back in my days at the Main Stealer we used to remove the engine and box as a unit, then split them on the floor. I never liked doing them that way, because it always seemed to make it a much bigger job in my mind than just dropping the box out on its own. But I had heard of the problems of removing ...

Re: BW65 selector shaft seal/o-ring

the leak is on the drives/off/right (depending on your preferred "notation") side of the car/box.

That side is the front servo cover, so that has to be removed, the "O" ring for the selector shaft in the cover replaced, then IIRC there's a larger "O" ring that seals the servo cover to the ...

Re: BW65 selector shaft seal/o-ring

Has it got a selector shaft which is exposed on both sides of the box? If so which side is the problem?

IIRC on the servo side you have to remove the servo housing cover, as the seal is just an "O" in a groove in the housing, which won't come out with the shaft in place, but the housing will come ...

Re: Sprint auto has discharged a lot of type F fluid

Is this easy to fit without taking the box out? can it be replaced just by taking the sump off?

The sump doesn't have to be removed. You just remove the pipe from the rearmost cooler fitting, undo and remove that fitting, and replace it with the one with the valve. Refit the cooler pipe and ...

Re: Diagnosis/symptoms of Sprint auto inhibitor switch failure

The inhibitor switch only stops it cranking in R,D,2,1. It should crank in P & N only. If it cranks it won't be the inhibitor switch causing the non-start.

Don't bypass it.

Re: Sprint auto has discharged a lot of type F fluid

If the cars are left standing for that period of time without running the engine at all, the fluid in the converter can drain back into the main body of the gearbox, raising the fluid level artificially high, and causing leaks. Add that to what may have drained back from your cooler and there is ...

Re: graunching noise from 1850 BW65 autobox

It's an easy mistake to make, you're not the first, and you won't be the last. The good thing is that the Parking pawl on the BW65 has a ratchet mechanism that allows the pawl to override until the shaft stops rotating, at which point it will engage and lock the output shaft, and hold the car. Do ...

Re: Towing weight?

^^^^ Dolly wheels will get you round the "wheels on the road" but then the truck towing it can't be taxed in the "Recovery Vehicle" class, it has to be taxed PLG or Goods. I did towing for years and the longer I went on the worse it got. Now I'm glad to be out of it.
