I have done this many times with Brown. Before you start setting the timing make sure you've got a decent set of points and condesnser fitted and correctly gapped.

First, get No. 1 cylinder at TDC. Align the notch on the crank pulley with the timing mark to achieve this.
Insert the dizzy so that when it is fully in the rotor arm should be pointing to the 2nd inlet manifold bolt from the back of the engine.

This will get the static timing correct so's you can start the engine. Once the engine's running you can set the timing with a strobe light. The original figure is 11 deg BTDC but the optimum figure can vary due to modern unleaded fuels. I'm sure others can advise on what has worked best for themselves. Don't forget to put some fresh fuel in the tank and make sure you've got a decent battery for a healthy spark! Duff batteries and stale fuel won't help much.

I hope this helps.

Superflex bushes are readily available from Chris Witor or Wins International.

Your engine has been rebuilt but not run yet?
In that case it'll need to be retorqued.......
Start it up and run up to normal temperature. Switch off and leave to cool down (overnight) then retorque.
Please use a proper torque wrench and please use the proper BL tightening sequence.
Retorque again after 500 miles.

It'll be worthwhile for you to purchase a genuine BL workshop manual?
These do appear on ebay.

BMH also do a CD-ROM with all the manuals in PDF format. Expect to pay around £20 depending on where you buy it.

The Superflex bushes are highly recommended. You can also get suspension bushes in Polybush from Jigsaw which I also recommend.

Let us know how you get on. If you need any pointers with the static timing I can take some photos to show where the crankshaft pulley and rotor arm should be when No.1 cylinder (the one at the front of the engine) is at TDC.

Where to begin?
I bought one of these from Rimmers a few years ago.

First problem, it only "works" with Windows  . Which version is unclear after trying four different versions.

Using Windows 2000, it is possible* to access the files. However the indexes are numerical which means
you have to find things by trial and error. I dare say if you had all the manuals and parts catalogues to hand it
would be possible to cross reference the indexes  .

The pages are photocopies. Many are illegible. A parts catalogue where you can't read the part numbers....... :!:

Describing this CD as a complete waste of money is extremely kind.
The words necessary to make a fair description are not permitted on this forum (or on TV before 21:00).

* There is a trick to gaining access which took ages to discover (by chance) :( .

Don't say I didn't tell you.

Rimmers are aware that this CD is windows only and did offer me a full refund.

Ian, mine works on every Windows XP PC I've tried it on. It can be a bit tempremental on the odd occasion. All the manuals I've read are perfectly legible. I've even printed out the entire post-76 Dolomite parts catalogue on my laser printer.

I bought mine from Rimmer Bros.

Works with Windoze, yes, but Ian's saying that it only works with Windoze.

Ian, most 'Doze stuff will run under WINE on the superior operating systems that some of us use, perhaps that would provide a solution?

That said, the whole point of PDF is that the format is cross-platform capable so it ought to run under other systems. I have hundreds of circuit schematics and a fair few editions of Autodata on CDs that were made using Win 2K and they all read fine under Ubuntu 11.04 and Mac OS/X.

The part number for the thermostat housing is UKC6916 and is currently listed as NLA on Rimmer's site. It is the same as the TR7 so you can try the TR supliers as well as the other usual suspects. If you can't get one you may have to repair your's bearing in mind that it will be subject to high temperatures and liquid (the coolant). This should help you to choose a suitable bonding agent.

The soluion with these is to drill out the old steel broken pipe and get a new copper one threaded in. A local machine shop will do it for you for less than you will get another one.
