Little White Tolly Good Day's Progress

#98 Post by Lord Tolly »

Well today me and the wife decided we will attack the tolly engine removal.

After about 2 hours the so called TR7 engine was out :D

whilst Leisa was cleaning up the engine bay I decided to have a look at why the engine suddenly just died when she turned the key the wrong way so with my trusty torque wrench and 1"1/2 impact socket on the crank bolt I expected the worst.....but no the engine turned over fine :D :D :D :D :D :D

Then I raised the engine up to remove the sump and oil pump see if anything in there was to blame......apart from some very gungy oil and crud nothing then removed the rocker cover and nowt looked out of place there either.

all I can think of now is somthing must of jammed round the flywheel.

So my dilema is this...... do I refit this engine or go down in size to the 1850 I have cleaned down?????

:? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

Re-fit it, it is a known good engine.

I'm confused here Glenn. What makes you think that it's not a TR7 engine? If that's the case, then both must have the same capacity and in either case I'd agree with Alan; better the devil you know, etc.

But before shoving it back in there, go through everything in great detail in case there's something likely to cause it to stick again once fitted.

sorry John

the engine I have just taken out of the car is a TR7
the replacement I got was a 1850 which is what I have cleaned up to go back in.

I have looked hard at the TR7 lump and all seem's ok.

no nasties top and bottom of the engine so im thinking some how the starter must of cooked itself

AFAIK, starters aren't meant to sit at the usual idle speed of 850rpm even if accidentally for just a second... Personally, I'd be tempted to swap the starter and try it again.

my thoughts exactly at the moment, quite a relief really the engine appears to have survived the day :D :D :D

worst case senario at least I now have a freshly painted cleand down 1850 on standby if things go belly up.

Good position to be in. Although I hope that a starter swap sorts it out.

Fingers crossed mate.

Cheers Ken.

Not only that someone gave me a while back yet another 7 engine for free so I will have plenty of spares to fix it with lol

Now the plan at the moment is rub down the engine bay, paint the engine and engine bay, replace all nuts and bolts with stainless and refit with new clutch and finally get rid of the noisey release bearing :D
