Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Recessed? Not the right headgasket?
Arsebiscuits. What gasket do I need??
Bugger, bugger, bugger. At least it isn't all torqued down.

Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
I've emailed Mick Dolphin re: the correct headgasket set, rad hoses, thermostat and water pump gasket. Fingers crossed!
Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Jeronen is right, that engine will have no compression if you continue with that gasket

Good spot Jeroen...beat me to it.
I was gonna ask this question too...so glad you caught it before it all went pear shaped.

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.
Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Thanks hugely to the eagle-eyed folk who spotted the difference.
Does anyone have a piccie of the appropriate head gasket or a part number for one. Mick D is also puzzled as engines with this prefix are seemingly non-recessed and he is the one asking for the number. Just glad that it was spotted before I had bolted everything up. That would have been quite annoying.
Cheers
Ken

Indeed it does!
Good bloke that Mick Dolphin. He has most of the important bits (including the head gasket). Whoohoo.

Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
I had a look at the little right angled hose at the back of the engine and saw that it had perished badly, so that will need ordering. Today was mostly spent cleaning up various manifolds and thermostat housings. The steel piping that various hoses connect to have been taken down to bare metal, rust killed and etch primed. These will then be painted. Taking shape slowly but surely. Can't wait to get it all back together.

Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Well, it has all turned up. I now have more or less everything (apart from a bit of ordinary hose) to sort the Tolly out. Am working on Saturday, so maybe Sunday will see some progress.
Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
No progress today sadly but the day was well spent. I helped my friend with the steam engines strip out the flywheel from his Foden 6 tonner. Thanks be for fork lift trucks!
I have also rescued my unused Draper torque wrench from the loft and wonder if anyone could kindly supply me with the correct torque setting for the Tolly head. Nm if possible but not essential.
Cheers

Re: Project Satin Black - Help!!!!!!!!
Ken,
According to Mr Haynes, cylinder head to block = 38-45 lb ft or 5.2-6.2 kg m. Rocker shaft = 26-32 lb ft or 3.6-4.4 kg m.
Good luck.
