i looked at the doors. as usual, there is rust evident and also bodging!

this is the worst one; a large patch in the bottom of it. not looking forward too much to taking it apart....

Image

we also started looking at redoing the firewall. the old one shown doesn't fit very well

Image

we used the old one as a template and essentially filled in all of the gaps, and came up with this.

Image

quite alot of cardboard engineering happened today. decided to fill these in too.

Image

the bottom panel is aluminium and the top cardboard(i went home today before i could transfer it to ally)

Image

let me know your thoughts!

what is the next thing on the list, i hear you say?

ENGINE INSTALLATION.

awwwwwwwwwwww yeah.

slight change of plan......to a vauxhall redtop. reliable power which i could only dream of if i was using a triumph lump.

so, here goes.

here is the block plus adapter plate and Type 9 gearbox.

Image

the assembly in the car. we are aiming to have the block positioned slap bang in the middle of the subframe

Image

and with head!

Image

and lovely red cover thing. today it was just proof of concept really, deciding which thing to do first.

Image

so therefore we are making some engine mounts tomorrow!

:)

happy to answer any questions you may have!

Are you going to have to modify the gearbox remote to allow the gear lever to clear the transmission tunnel?

Which T9 are you using?
Which clutch components?
Cable or hydraulic?

Ian,

I think we are going to chop the gear selector tunnel and shorten it.

It's a Sierra 5 speed.

Clutch, I don't know yet.

Probably hydraulic.

Look! Engine mounts!

firstly, the nearside.

in cardboard first

Image

and then into a big slab of metal!

Image

on the engine...

Image

then a piece of roll cage tubing welded onto it. weird coincidence that the bushes that alan had fitted into roll cage tubing!

Image

on the car again. along with a piece on the subframe engine mount

Image

Image

some ears!

Image

welded together!

Image

and now the other side!

firstly this was welded onto the subframe

Image

we used this rather nifty contraption to cut some more roll cage tubing on an angle to go between these...

Image

Image

two parts. essentially the same construction as the other side but since the engine is further away from the subframe on the drivers side it needs extending!

Image

a bit like this

Image

Image

we gusseted the underneath

Image

and the best thing is, the bonnet closes!

Image

with just under an inch of clearance :)

i am away tomorrow, friday and over the weekend so there will be more updates next week!

i will answer any questions :D

Great work as usual, what bits are you using from the original car?

Good question!

Not alot.

Front suspension.

Wheels.

Chrome bits.

Rear suspension

Glass.

Can't think of anything else!

Timewise it was a day per engine mount. That included thinking of the idea first and then actually turning it into what to you see here.

I would just like to reiterate that it is not me who is the mechanical genius. I just take the pictures and fabricate the odd bracket or two :-P

But thanks for the compliment and I will tell Alan you said so :-)
