Gearbox woes (or are they?!)

Yes you mean whats known as the 2000E box after the corsair that had it first.

Thats analagous to the Sprint TR6 box versus the single rail or 3 rail small box. Shift action is a matter of taste but while the ford box
was okay its not that much better than a Triumph large or small. The box in my Spit is a very nice one...as good as any ford Ive ever driven.
I think the ratio set in an 1850 or Sprint is pretty well chosen.

Still rate the MGB box as better than the lot...real rifle bolt precision and pretty bullet proof too.

The SD1 LT77 box is ok but has an oil pump and cant be towed, and is a complete nightmare to rebuild.

Talking of semi synthetic 75/90 gear oil, I wonder if anybody has used it in a triumph box. After all, it is available in GL4 spec, so should be suitable.....

I've owned more old Fords than anything else and their gear change was good but I don't think there was much in it between them (2 Mk5 Cortina's and a Mk3 Capri...) and my Toledo...

I think that the Ford manual boxes were quite highly praised by the motoring press when new but how they lasted over time probably wasn't thought of when those articles were being written!!!

As already mentioned, I think proper maintenance is what keeps these parts of any car in tip-top condition so different cars will naturally feel different whether it's gearbox related or not.

Anyhow, I had a lovely weekend driving my Toledo and the gearbox was fine so I think I just need to be gentle with it for now and seek some mechanical investigation sooner rahter than later!

Well it seems things are getting worse...

Second is crunchy if I make a quick change up from first or down from third...!!!

Also, fourth is a nightmare to be honest... It almost feels as if there is nothing there and when it does engage (if I'm too quick with it!) it will crunch like a right old bugger...!!!

Is my gearbox quacked...?!?!?!

Ash, if I was in your position I'd take the gearbox out to determine what is what.
As a matter of course I would fit a new complete new clutch......

Thanks Jon, I think I may have to bring the old chap round to you so you can spend a bit of time with it and see what's what...

I am loathe to change the gearbox though as I'd like to keep everything 'production-line' standard as it were...!!! I'd rather replace the internals than the gearbox as a whole...

It's not unusable (with regards to the gearbox) it just needs a bit of relaxed thought as it were...!
