Thank you Tony!

Good idea that....could easily have forgotten to do it!

Thank you youngman....there's a lot to live up on here, some of the quality of work is better than new, so I've got a lot to compete with!

Any of the known brands would be ok and use EP90. Im sure someone here will have more experience of it though.

Use a decent quality gear oil and whatever you do, DON'T use any additives because they will wreck the overdrive.

I found some Castrol EP80/90 GL4 in Halfords the the day for £5 a litre. Sadly they only had one but other stores may still have stock. I would probably go GL4 rather than GL5 spec.

When I look at the photo of your engine and gearbox assembly it reminds me of the battles of trying to eliminate (reduce) the oil leaks I was having twelve or more months ago with my car.

Can I make a couple of suggestions here, just in case you have not done what I had to do.

I have marked four points on your photo where oil leaks can and will occur.

The two left arrows mark where you still have to bolt the bracket which supports the exhaust downpipe. That bracket is essential for it stops all the flexing in the exhaust manifold which is going to occur as the engine rocks around when it is running. It "ties" the exhaust to the subframe and the flexing is taken up in the exhaust system behind that bracket. You can see photos of that bracket and what I did in one of my threads on my restoration. I ran a bead of the Threebond sealer I use under the washers at those three points. While you are at it, it is also advisable to run a bead of sealant under the heads of the bolts which bolt up the overdrive filter cover plate which is underneath the overdrive and on which it is sitting on those pieces of wood (bottom arrow).

I note some slight differences between the almost identical photos I have of my engine and gearbox assembly and yours. Another inhibitor switch in the top cover which I assume will allow you to engage the overdrive in second gear as well as third and fourth gears? And no clutch actuating mechanism fitted at this point?

It is all looking very smart. Keep up the good work!

Cheers for the very helpful comments Robert, I've been using the pictures of your engine to check mine against so I'm well acquainted with it!

I've just ordered some Threebond sealer upon your recommendation...it's a pity you didn't tell me earlier before I nailed the engine and gearbox together as it would have been much easier to refit the bolts on the filter cover plate etc. with it on the bench! :)

You're correct in pointing out the overdrive switch on second - I intend on sprinting the car when it' done so I'm thinking it's better having one fitted whilst it's easy to get at than retro fitting it later.

As I intend using it for sporting use, I was advised that a standard clutch mechanism could quickly be overstressed so I've fitted one of Rob Macgregor's Clutch thrust bearing kits......

Cheers for your help and interest Robert!
