I remember Alun having an issue with the timing chain on the quicksprint, so where is the best place to get one?

Its not so much the chain as the tensioner.

You need the Jaguar reynolds OE one, not the rolon one which suffers from pad detachment.

Just reviving a thread as I had to update some products on the works website. Anyway seems that the people here have developed an alternative Jaguar timing chain tensioner for the XK engine and also for Healey 3000 but I have no idea if this design is suitable for our cars?

I have not gone and inspected one in the stores yet or compared to an original style one, which is also listed and is in stock. There's a 3d model view too which is actually quite helpful.

Just looking at the picture you posted is enough to tell that one is not suitable for a Sprint engine.

Yes it's the 'competition' style one which replaces the one we know the look of. SNG Barratt also do something similar and you can see the two on their website

I can see that the bolt fitting looks similar , but the direction in which the pressure is applied looks all wrong - by about 45 degrees.
I was going to say that if Barrets reckon it's OK then that would be good enough - then I remembered that Barrets don't do Stag stuff any more!
I think i'd have to offer one up to a engine with chain fitted to see what it looked like in situ before drawing a definite conclusion. It may well be that by reducing the angle of incidence between the tensioner pad and the chain, this modified one is reducing the shear load on the pad to shaft join. Which would be a very good thing indeed!

I'll have to see if I can borrow one for evaluation purposes. I'll also ask about the design to see why it is so different in design. I know that these things are all born out of race proving which tends to highlight faults in the original design. I'd be interested to hear from the racers on here as to what tensioners they use as I don't imagine they are Rolon ones.

The racers are squabbling over the last few NOS Renolds ones or else looking for useable substitutes, like Trackerjack Jon with his Nissan one, Alun Nicholas, now using Jag and Mad Mart who started this thread to find something to use!
I'd like to see what Saab offer here, many years ago I used a (Unipart) Sprint one on my Saab 99 for cost reasons - the Saab version cost 4 times as much and looked identical - so I see no reason not to now reverse the situation for quality reasons!
However if your race bred Jag one does the trick, is an IMPROVEMENT on the original design and a sensible price (which it is) then all our problems are solved!

If you scroll down beneath the pic of the Barratt's competition tensioner, you'll see two other items.
One is the Rolon rubbish, (EAC3629*) but the other is more expensive because its the original Jaguar tensioner. Still available, for 18 pounds. (EAC3629) Notice how the pad is bonded around the edges of the plate. Its much more substantial than the Rolon thing, which just sits on the plate.

I almost bought one of the Datsun 1600/1800/2000 ones, but decided against it when I noticed the pad ramp slope. Its steeper than the Sprint's chain angle and will wear quickly due to it applying pressure to a smaller area of the chain. Although the holes line up nicely, its .25" wider and taller than the Sprint's.

Interesting that the Renold unit is made in france. Were they used on french engines and passed over to BL or made specifically by the for us? Were they the leaders in bonding rubber to metal?

There are quite a few Jaguar parts suppliers here, (I used to own an XJ6) but when I enquired, only one had the decency to reply.
His price was WAY over the top too, so I bit the bullet and bought the Barratt one. Its winging its way over here right now, along with some gaskets, a seal etc.
I'm often asked why do I import so much from the UK for my Sprint and Zephyr, and the USofA for my Model T's and N scale railroad. I answer that even with the low AU$, it pays to add the shipping costs to the price of the item and compare it with whats available on the local market.
It usually, but not always, comes out in favour of the import.

The standard Jaguar one looks much better than the Rolon one, it is after all the pad coming unstuck that causes the problem. We have stock taking over the next few days but I will have a look at various examples next week for an up close comparison.
