LED Daylight Driving Lights......?
LED Daylight Driving Lights......?
I am going to fit daylight driving LED lights.
As more and more cars have daylight driving lights I think it is important to follow suit, especially since my car
is a dark colour (Sienna brown). During the 80s, driving a (Maple) brown T2500 on the A9 between Inverness and Perth particularly
I was bothered with oncoming traffic pulling out to overtake. So much so that I resorted to driving with dipped headlamps on most of the time.
What to you good folk think of using LEDs in the sidelights for this purpose?
After some consideration I have decided against it, instead I am opting for adding additional LED lighting.
I have checked the rules, driving lights must come on with the ignition and be extinguished when headlights are employed
(a controller is easy enough to wire in for this switching).
thanks,
Ian.

Re: LED Daylight Driving Lights......?
Ian,
I run a pair of led's in the grille of KAC for this purpose.
They are fed from the coil feed, and earthed via the sidelight positive feed.
Ign on, led's on
Ign on, lights on, led's off.

Just switch your headlights on if your that concerned about getting hit by another driver - the amount of car's running with headlights on is unbelievable.

Re: LED Daylight Driving Lights......?
My BMW has a auto light sensor which switches on the side and dipped in light levels I wouldn't normally bother.
Must be a German law compliance, all I know is, in the event of an accident I can say my lights were on, and the third party was not paying attention.

Re: LED Daylight Driving Lights......?
I've run these for a couple of years plus now and find it remarkable how effective they have been. The car gets a lot more respect in terms of road presence than it used to - others move over quicker when I'm in the outside lane of the motorway and they don't pull out of side roads in town as often as without them.
Sure I could put headlights on, but then I don't need to in other moderns I drive as they have DRLs fitted so it is just one less thing to remember.
They are fitted into the grill and wired correctly as they came with a controller that meant live, earth and a connection to a sidelight to read when the power lights were on. Easy. The look isn't original but is better than a stoved in front (and yes I do have spare original plastic grills in case I ever want to go back to original)

What you could do is buy a set of halogen headlights with the built in pilot sidelight. This would keep a nice original look and would be simple enough to wire up the pilots as DRL's. There are people selling complete kits for £100 or so but you could probably buy the parts cheaper and some wire.

I've just done one side of my halogen conversion, but have not connected the pilot, might be an idea to do.

Okay,.....
Thanks for the replies.
I don't want to buy more halogen headlamps as I have very good used Jaguar XJ40 ones fitted already
(given their price new, these would need to be good!).
Taking Bruce's suggestion, I am going to try an LED sidelight fitted into each front grill.
Yes I know that these are not actually daylight running lights but as long as they are correctly located,
they only need to work for an MOT and obviously I don't need to submit the car for an IVA!!

By the way, if you haven't already done so, do get a copy of the free CBS catalogue. They are a very good company
who not only offer free post and packing, but also give a 10% discount to TDC members

I've got their catalogue, it's amazing. One of those things you could spend hours reading (as sad as it sounds..)sprint95m wrote: By the way, if you haven't already done so, do get a copy of the free CBS catalogue. They are a very good company
