Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
I have bought a new rubber seal from Rimmers
How do they fit to the shell ?
Are they glued on , or do they just push over the lip around the boot lid on the car ?
- as there is a groove in the seal
Many thanks for your answers

Okay.......
Simon, what you have is an alternative design to the original,
one which is fitted over the boot aperture lip instead of being glued to the boot lid.

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the reply
Mines a 1973 car , were the rubber seals all fitted to the boot lid ?
Do you know where I can find an original seal , or who makes them now ?
Thanks

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
I recently purchased a boot seal from Rimmer's and it was the one that is glued to the boot lid. This did have a groove in it but it is part of the design and does not fit over the body lip. I know cause I checked it out. However it was a pig and a half to fit. The glue I got that was recommended was slow to go off. It allowed good positioning but gravity would cause it to drop off before it set. After three of us failed to hold it on the glue got contaminated and it ended up in the bin. A second was purchased and a different contact glue applied. This grabbed it to quickly and would not allow the seal to be positioned so a second went in the bin. I then got one that fitted on the body lip, its a very good seal and dead easy to fit.
If I was going to fit a boot lid one again I would take the lid off and fit it with the lid upside down to allow gravity to help not hinder and use the first glue that gave time to move and position the seal. I cant remember the name of the glue I used but the instructions were clear on it having a little time to position before it going off.

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
Thanks for the info
I agree it's bit of a dilemma to know what seal to use
I know early Sprints had the seal glued onto the inside of the boot lid
Did later ones have the seal fitted onto the body shell lip ?

To my knowledge, all Dolomites were the same. All on the lid.
Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
I know this does not help immediately, but I have ordered 5 different types of gripping seals, which will arrive next week.
Pictures will be posted of the best fitting.

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
When I put the new bootlid on the Carledo, I managed to salvage the original seal and glued it in place on the new lid with good old fashioned Evo-Stick. 3 years on, it's still there and the boot is dry. What's the problem?

Boot lid seal ...about a year ago..
Purchased from Rimmers; did not fancy doing this upside down, so took lid off - on the kitchen table in the warm. Test fitted it - the seal would have gone on upside down! Spotted the problem, when you look at the lip it seats onto, the "way up" is obvious.
Used everyday domestic glue, tags of masking tape to hold on corners.
Let it dry overnight.
Refitted. Fine, but took 3 weeks to squash a bit so that boot slamming did not quite become a habit.

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
I ordered a 'grip on lip' seal from Wins on Tuesday, fitted it today, it's perfect.
£14.40 plus £5.94 shipping (including vat on both).

Re: Fitting Boot lid rubber seals
I've been getting water in the boot as well. Mine has the original seal glued onto the boot lid, so I ordered one from Mr Rimmers. This is rather different in that the replacement seal has a groove in it and the rubber is not symmetrical about the groove. It doesn't fit tightly over the lip on the boot so I'm going to try removing the old seal and fitting to boot lid with Evostik in the same way that Dolowighty has done.

It looks like the groove in the seal goes inwards in this case.
I'll let you know how it goes as we are promised thunderstorms late tomorrow.
Tony.
