I took the bezel off and removed the old belt or o ring from the back, and to clean up
put the ring in the ultrasonic cleaner. This removed the crud from the back a treat, but
also took off some of the black paint from the front.

After doing a couple of the gauge rings in the ultrasonic I realised it was the hot water
doing the job.

I then changed tact (wear kitchen gloves) and run under the hot tap, the paint comes off
with only a slight thumb nail whilst hot !. This method proved easiest as there is a
perfect finish under the black with no further polishing required or scratches left.

Also I am about to go and see if the mrs has any of those nail polish remover pads,
as Jeroen said, the clock is not easy and I have found it resistant to most solvents,
if only this thought came to mind yesterday I may have had the job done quicker.

Gauges and clocks are a secondary job which in the scheme of things get done first, but back
to the water leak,

All three (speedo, heater, choke) cable grommets are letting in some water,

There was a hole in the top at the wipers which probably done this,

Not sure much can be done at the moment, other than a bit of jenolite and hammerite.

More water is coming in from the tunnell back area, (pic to follow) theres a big hole there)
and also from somewhere else, (qed).

I was showing the cleaned up dashboard and gauges to Mick across the road,
and he commented on why the speedo one is scratched.

Being easy to take out I removed the chrome ring and placed the plastic
window in his hand, immediately he left my premises and went to his shop
across the road with the speedo window.

Mick returned 5 minutes later with,

Being a glass merchant, it was too easy for him to sort out.

Though the screen opening is perfect and the original rubber was OK

I suspect that water has been getting into that box section via the wiper wheelbox seals for a very long time, leading to that hole. And others further along!

That one is too low down to be responsible for the rot, though it won't help with keeping carpets dry!

Missing and perished grommets in the bulkhead seems pretty common on Dolomites. I think the "I'll just wire this gadget up" brigade have a lot of rust to answer for!

The extra holes must be for the plethora of optional extras available in the 70's.

It looks like I can change the demister tube without taking out the dashboard?

There should be a long metal strip screwed down over the top of those vents.

Thats come back from the cleaners looking like new!

Have to obtain a green ring to match the dials, seems unlikely.

I may have to order an Ebay unit with a green ring and diy (bodge) it.
