I still have one further support to fabricate that being to replace the two spindly tubes which currently hold the steering unit from just below the windscreen and to complete the bearing carrier i am making for the lower steering column where it enters the firewall. There is also one final fixing underneath the cowling or the steering column. On the original a screw fixes into the aluminium casting which makes up the steering lock assembly, as i am not using this i intend to bond a piece of aluminium onto the casing in position and drill and tap to take the screw. Will lay out the individual parts of the bearing carrier and shafts to photograph once completed. Mechanically the system should then be complete and on to the wiring. Due to the increase in electrical items i have decided to replace the original fusebox and have obtained a twelve fuse box which has a seperate bus for ignition fed (six fuses) and non ignition fed ( six fuses) provided i can fit it in the available space that is!

having now completed the steering column and lower bearings I have enclosed photos of the said items:-
!. View of the lower shaft which is made up of top portion of Fiat lower shaft with U.J., sleeve and lower 3 inches of Dolomite shaft.
2.Fabricated bearing carrier with bearing and upper thrust.
3.close up of shaft
4. Bearing constructed
5.Shaft and bearing assembled

When assembled the shaft goes through the firewall, through the lower bearing assembly and then through the usual Dolomite bearing on the other side of firewall. Now on to the wiring, I will complete this when I get the new fuse box installed. Once I get the steering installation completed I will look to rebuilding the dash and heater assembly. I am considering modifying the heater and replacing the matrix and heater box with a smaller unit with a higher output from Demon Tweeks, it will mean that not all the heater controls will work as now but will have a better output and save on space under the dash as I have plans to fit a tracker system to the car and that space under the dash would be an ideal place to fit it. I already have the tracker unit bought for a different car and never fitted. Be useful in this car especially as now I no longer have a steering lock.
IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED I HAVE A COMPLETE CORSA C ELECTRIC STEERING UNIT WHICH I DO NOT NEED, should anybody fancy doing the change on their car. It is based in the Stourbridge area of the West Midlands for collection or could be posted at new owners expense

Hi, I'm currently trying to do the same thing. Started with a corsa column and now thinking its too big so looking to the fiat unit.

Wondered how you are getting on and whether the GM ecu and fiat column do work OK?

Any update would be appreciated.

Looks like a tidy fusebox setup, where did you get it?

Tony
I'll get round to it - some day! :bluewave:

Not quite finished it yet due to weather and the need to work outside mechanically it is finished but have some electrical work to do yet am in the process of moving the battery into the boot out of the way to give more room in engine bay. Toying with the idea of fitting HID lamps and including the headlamp washers and levellers which are required. The original battery position is being used in that bit.

As to the fusebox can't actually remember where i got it it was on line, i will sort out the invoice and post reply soon

Fusebox came from ECS Electrical Car Services dig into their on line catalogue and you will find it it's about £26.00 though. Jez

Thanks; I'll take a look.
My Latham is currently running a 10 fuse box, but it doesn't have any facility for busbars. I had to solder some brass rod to it; it works but could be tidier.

Perhaps you could give us an update when you have got it working. Also will the Dolomite plastic nacelle cover fit onto the modified column?

Yes will do, the plastic cover fits over ok with a bit of work and some brackets fitting to support it internally.

Hi Reme5969,
PaulB wandered if you had got your power steering going yet?
We have installed ours but it is a way off testing yet.

It isn't Orange!!!!!!
The other one wasn't Purple either!!!
One of the new ones will probably be green, very green.
Another new one is green too but not as green as the previous one. Still pretty green. No, now it's Blue.
The other new one will be white with stripes. Actually it might not. No, it will be.
BUT, that one is definitely Yellow :=}

Gez's car (reme5969) is in my yard now for finishing up as his health is not so good. Sadly, it is back on normal manual steering and the modified column has been sold (to whom I don't know)
