Now I've noticed my 1850's n/s front tyre is starting to wear noticeably on the outer edge. Since its only the one side I suspect wheel bearing or ball joints. Wheel bearing feels O.K. by the wiggle-the-wheel-test, and I understand the upper and lower ball-joints are tested by letting the wheel hang and then trying to lever it upwards gently with a crow-bar and feeling for movement between the moving bit and the fixed bit.
Both joints feel O.K. by this method.
And the car still handles nicely
Is there any other test I can do ?
Thanks,
Tony.

I think Tony is right that it is unlikely to be tracking if the wear is on N/S only.
Tony, do you by chance regularly park on the upper floors of a multi storey car park with a clockwise ramp system?

Lot of roundabouts?
Is the inner edge of the other tyre worn?
Have a look at your tears.

If it is roundabouts, can it be classed as Milton Keynes syndrome ?

Re: Testing upper/ lower front ball-joints.
The ball joints should have zero play. If that's the case it isn't them. Try the track rod end.
Also have a look at the inner wishbone to sub frame bush, but this usually causes inner edge wear.
I would still have the tracking checked.
